Bottom End Power Problems

I've got a1979 cj7 AMC 304 with 31 x 10.5 tires.
my problem started suddenly after I drove through a relativly bumpy dirt road a few days ago. Almost right away my alternator started putting out 11 volts, and I had almost no power between 500 - 2500 rpm. I think I've fixed the alternator problem but all torque and HP are gone until about 2500rpm and then the thing takes off. It will take me atleast 1-2 minutes to get up to 35 miles an hour, and it has problems maintaining any speed uphill. I'm thinking my timing might have been knocked off a few degrees, but I'm not sure. I advanced the timing a few weeks ago and it ran better then it ever had, but now it doesn't seem to make a difference whether I floor it or give it 1/4 throttle. Anyone had any similar experiences or know what it could be?? Thanks:confused:

It's easier at times diagnosing a No Start than a running problem. You mentioned a bumpy road... The float in your carb might be sticking..

You said it takes a few minutes to build up speed to 35mph.. Is your foot buried to the floor? Is the acceleration smooth or is it bucking?

Do you have a cat installed? If you do bang on it and see if it sounds like the catalyst is loose, sometimes they break apart and act like the "potato in the tail pipe".

Buy a cheap vacuum gauge and enough line so you can watch it through the windshield. Make note of the inches it pulls in relation to the tach. Record the data and post..

Oh, while you're at it replace your fuel filter.

I am new to Jeep and do not know what Jeep came with what electronics but i do know that the voltage needs to be at 13.8 to make um run right.

maybe after you replace the alternator/regulator/ ground wires it will run better.

LOL,
