San Diego Area

Looking to hook up with some beginning to intermediate off-roaders in the San Diego area.

I am a newb to jeeping but not to common sense. I bought a jeep to try, and if I like it I will buy another and give this one to my daughter.

I am truly a quick learner and looking for other beginners or some old salt that is just willing to share the wisdom of their experience.

I would like to go jeeping at least once a month and of course more during the learning stages.

Currently, fire roads are all I have found around hear and a few construction areas.

What I am proposing is that all the way south newbs UNITE... if we can find some old salts to come along we can all learn faster. But I say lets get this thing rolling...

WHO IS WITH ME....?

Current jeep is

88 YJ
31x10.5.15 BFG ATs
I6 258 carbed
Pretty good condition but I am replacing all the parts that should have been replaced ages ago. (Hoses/clamps/Top etc...)
(The jeep sat for 3 years so I'm shaking out all the cobwebs...)

Yeah, I started right to left as well. My passenger side mirror was folded flat against the right boulder. I then pushed left to come down the drop and avoid getting tilted too far left. Just barely kissed the drivers side, just at the B pillar on the doors.

I rid myself of some ugly fat today. This thing hasn't been hooked up in four years, so why do I even have it? Gone.

And I did a permanent fix on that pesky lower starter bolt. Every bell housing I have ever had stripped that hole out.
So I tapped it with a 10mm X 1.50 tap, then ran three nuts together on a piece of 7/16 X14 all thread. I screwed the allthread into the hole, it didn't want to go easily but it seated tight. Put the starter on, double nutted it, and it's finally solid.
Get rid of the quick disconnects too?

Damn, I really need to get my TJ back in 4wd more and go out with you guys sometime.

Hey Joe, got a question for you. Remember that garage opener you helped me work on? Still works great (thanks for that btw), but doesn't work with an opener. I've tried a few universals and it doesn't seem to receive any signals. I can't find much online. Any ideas?

I don't recall which opener you have. Can you take a look at it & post-up what it is? EG: Liftmaster 1/2 HP screw drive etc. Or maybe post a pic of it.

I have the same cell number, so you can call me if you wish.

.
Yeah I only used them one time, the first day I put them on the Jeep. The first run out I disconnected them and never connected them again. I found the pins in my console.
All my spring bushings are new, I have YJ springs not CJ springs, and I run a 12.50 inch tire on only a 2.5 inch lift. I have no body roll at all.

I need to get those rear shock extenders on and welded, then new shocks all around. Then I'm ready to wheel again.

Same for made. Made some quick disconnects and kept forgetting to hook them back up. I did find out a couple weeks ago that coming into a turn at about 45 with no sway bar and 9psi in the tires is an adventure.

What extenders do you have? The MORE brackets raise the top, no welding. Just one hole to drill for the locator pin.

They cost about $90 but would be pretty easy to make.

I have something similar, but you have to use a bolt for the shock.
Problem is, the part with the pin does not reach far enough to go into the frame. The stock mount is on a bracket of some sort and the pin touches the frame but isn't long enough to require a hole.
They look basically the same......

I'll never forget the day that I neglected to hook up my quick discos. The YJ doesn't maneuver around rice *******s as quickly without it on

Rik you need to update your Jeep profile :shhh:

I rode most of the time with my sway bar disconnected before I went antirock. Minor loss in handling wasn't usually worth spending the time to connect back up.

I love the antirock now, took a couple days to get use to the way it handled, but I'll never go back!
Yeah in a TJ or JK the sway bar is important. In a YJ it's dead weight with wide tires and tight steering.

So I modified my shock extenders, now they just need to be welded in place and I can get new shocks.
I cut off the excess on the rear axle u-bolts while I was under there. They hung up on rocks a lot. The were about three inches too long.
