Project REDLYNER: Ultra4 Race Jeep Driven Daily...

EDIT: VillagePhotos has crashed, taken their customers money and lost all of their pictures. This means roughly 1,000 pictures in this thread are now dead links. I switched to a new server and pictures start back on page 99. SORRY!!

Pics start back:

This is way late in the game to start a build thread, so it is not a from scratch build.

I'll try to give a little back ground on the jeep and the build so far-

Number one, I have one of the most understanding wives out there. Not only does she support most of the mods, but she talks me into higher quality parts when I want to normally go cheap.

Number two, I bought this TJ when I lived in Colorado and immediately got addicted to rocks. But more importantly, addicted to the slick Rock in Moab. Every single mod on this rig was built or added with Moab trails in mind. So to keep this thread from being too wordy, I'll start throwing out some pics.

I bought the Jeep with a Rubicon Express 3.5" lift and 33"s. It had never been offroad according to the previous owner and after I inspected it, I was pretty convinced he was telling the truth. Not a spec of dirt in anything underneath the rig and not a scratch to be found. I think I got a deal.

This is a multi-stage build. Each stage represented taking to the next level of trail difficulty.

Pictures were not that great until like 2009 when we got a nice camera...

Here is a short recap of stage 1:

Day I brought it home back in 2006- I almost broke the Dana 35 because of the amount of Armor All on it:

Stage one was getting this thing so I could recover myself and be recovered. Also need to protect the easiest areas to damage- so the short list was:

Warn Rock Sliders
Warn Front Bumber
Warn Winch Mount
Tow Hooks
ARB Shackles
Warn M8000 Winch
Auburn Front Selectable Locker and install kit
Uniden CB
Kilby Gas Tank Skid

The 4 Wheel Parts show and local 4x4 board made it pretty easy to get some smoking deals:

And on went the first round of mods:

Bumper and winch:

Gas tank off, new tank on:

With the armor on, CB in and Auburn Locker front locker installed, it was time to go play in Moab:

I don't know if the Inter-Net would reach critical fissile status or not, but I can guarantee that the Recap/Write-Up of the race would be 100% Awesome. :D

Sponsored by chik filet :).
Can someone hurry up and call them about that? I could have bought a pair of Spyder 9's with what I've spent in Spicy Chicken Sammiches, to date.

A few small tweaks and changes are coming for the race rig. Just trying to get everything a little tighter, easier access, etc. Amazing how much stress can be created with things flying around- so one of my next steps is to install a 12voltguy in-cab winch controller. This thing is rediculously cool, it's simplicity and clean lines definitely make it Mall Crawler approved :D. I hope to get it installed later this week.

Now this is where it gets really technical. I'm racing again in 6 days and the weather is predicting rain..... and this venue is already muddy during a drought . So I picked up some gear at Autozone to try and help with the pain-

Pro-Race seat covers and Mothers Carnuba wax.

Only the important mods for this jeep :D.

I'm stoked to have more JeepForum guys helping out! 6 days until pre-running again, 7 days until D-town racing!

Looks like Sundowner and 84jeepcj7rock are on alert 5 in case co-driver #1 doesn't make it. Either way, I'm hoping they both make it down!

Just in time, Brown Dog Industries yellow goodness! Slowly but surely, I am addressing each weak point that has been exposed. Hoping to have these in today (headed up to CMM this afternoon).

That's it for right now. I've been waiting on some parts to get in and haven't driven it yet (working on TC mount as well). The goal is to get it on all four wheels by this evening, then log a 100 miles or so over the next couple days to break in the tires for this weekend.

Truth.

I'm pumped about the mounts, I looked at all of the brands and they all had great reviews, but Brown Dog seemed to have more mounts out there being beat on. So, easy decision.

I love my Brown Dog mounts - fit was great & they've held up fantastic. I wish they had the beefed up ones you got when I got mine - I may have to upgrade...

Curious on the state of the additional (previously unused) threaded holes in the engine. Mainly do you only need to chase them with a tap - or - over drill and tap - or - over drill and helicoil? My AEV oil pan skid catches a few threaded holes in the block and I stripped both of them and had to go up a bolt size. Added strength just a pain!

If shiny = fast.........

Then it's time to get shiny!!!

CMM clear coated 7075-

Got the Hankooks mounted and logged about 50 miles on them yesterday. Very quiet for an M/T. I was running at 32psi and didn't have any vibrations. Today I lowered them to 20psi and will put another 40 or 50 miles on them. Initial impression is that they are huge. I can't wait to get them out on the rocks!

I did get the most important thing done- two coats of Mothers Carnuba wax :D. Now I need to actually focus on race prep .

I've got one pop up, but it couldn't hurt to have another. Floor jack?

I'm fired up that you can make it!

Digging the new lowers! You looking to change the uppers as well, or keeping the Claytons?
Experimenting right now, we'll see what happens down the road.

I see rust, man. Un.Ac.Ceptable. Your cred just dropped a bit... ;)

I'm still running Clayton uppers and LOVE them. I will always be changing the jeep though, it's almost like a living organism :). I've had 7 different sets of tires on it and 6 different rear corner guards, I just enjoy seeing it morph.

I've done wd40 in the past, but will be soaking the underside with Pam for this weekend.

The question is, do I go with unscented or hint of Butter?
