Poison Spyder 2014 KOH Build: BAJK (AKA "Crispy")

As some of you saw, the Venom One/BFH Racer, which was our King Of the Hammers entry the past two years, was recently sold. Many have asked what our plans are for KOH 2014, so we'll discuss it and cover the build in this thread. Let's start it off with the rendering of what the finished product should roughly look like:

As you can see, it resembles a Jeep quite a bit more closely than our last racer did, and that's our intention. In fact we're building it out of a Jeep, and are trying to maintain the outer appearance as closely as possible. But we're racing it in Ultra4--not Stock or Mod--so while it will be all Jeep on the outside, it will be all racer on the inside!

So let's get started. Our buddy Randall had an unfortunate incident a few years ago when his brand new (only a couple runs on it) 4-door JK caught fire towing it home from an event. Here's what it looked like before that.

...and then...

...and hence the nickname this Jeep has had ever since: "Crispy". We took Crispy's remains off of Randall's hands for safe keeping. We knew we would eventually have a perfect project for it.

Fast forward 3 years later, and the idea for this project began to take shape. Crispy was the perfect candidate. All we needed was a tub and a frame anyhow, so we brought it into the shop and began cleaning it up.

Last photo updates before King Of the Hammers! When we last updated this thread we had just completed testing out in Johnson Valley. In the couple of weeks since, Crispy got tore back down, axles sent to Currie for final go-through, Crispy went to paint and pieces went to powder coat, then everything came back for re-assembly. Last was graphics application, which was just completed last night. Now everything's getting loaded up, and most of our traveling circus should be on the lakebed by tomorrow. Enjoy the photos!

Thanks everyone who has followed along with this build thread and rooted for us at King Of the Hammers. Unfortunately we had a problem with our cooling system on the second lap and were down for over three hours doing field repairs, which eventually led to us timing out and getting a DNF. Crispy was back up and running strong, about 1/2 way through the third and final lap when time ran out. We'll post up some more complete race details soon, but first let's get you some photos in chronological order. This first set of photos is from a magazine photo shoot we did on Friday before KOH week. These are our own photos that I managed to shoot while the magazine photog was doing his thing. Enjoy!

Fairly early in the lap, near the beginning of the first rock section, Larry was coming in hot and hit a big rock hard on the driver's side wheel. Dan O'Leary caught a great sequence of shots beginning just after it happened. The impact popped the tire but Larry and Greezy kept going, finishing the lap on 3 good tires with a middle-of-the-pack time. With the tire flat, the wheel took quite a bit of punishment from the rocks and came apart. There was some damage to the steering and brakes too, that all had to be fixed before the big race on Friday.

Here's a video from the Qualifying Lap that includes some pretty cool GoPro footage of the entire run. We had the in-car audio wired into one of the GoPro's and caught the interesting conversation between Larry and Greezy during the run. Check it out and let us know what you think!

The quality of construction and attention to detail is simply staggering. Incredible build! That said, I am just as impressed with the cleanliness of the shop and have no doubt that plays a key role in the quality of the finished product that rolls out of it.

Look forward to seeing Crispy in person out at Bantam and KOH next year.

Crispy was out on the East Coast all summer, including an event at Rausch Creek. If you missed it there you'll just have to watch the movie (or come out to King Of the Hammers!) because Crispy won't be on next year's east coast tour. We'll be sending out a different set of rigs, gotta keep things fresh!
