I'm a bit in love with my stock jeep but I'd like a winch. Anyone know a good and possibly cheap bumper and winch setup that resembles the stock bumper? I don't want to hide the winch I don't mind showing that off but I don't want a huge bumper I just want a simple bumper that can hold a winch.
There are hidden winches available that will mount behind the stock bumper. I don't know exactly where you should look, but I know Charley3 does. Send him a PM, and tell him I sent you.
Well I don't really want a hidden one and I don't mind dishing out some $ but my xj isn't a big heavy duty off roader so I don't want a bulky off road bumper. Feel me?
I built a box for my winch, just big enough to mount it in and then I cut my stock bumper into three pieces and used the two outer ends and mounted them back with the stock hardware. It isn't real strong (as we know our stock XJ bumpers aren't real strong) but it looks better than just the box mounted on the front. I have plans on finishing the bumper build in the future as I can free up funds to buy more steel, but for now, it looks fairly good (to me anyway).
It cost me maybe $25 for enough steel to make the box and the frame rail tie-in's. Oh, and maybe another $20 or so for the grade 8 bolts.
I'm not skilled at all with my hands so I wouldn't dare attempt something like that but it sounds neat and I'd love to see pictures of your handy work if you have any
Tucked & trimmed winch build. Google that. I prefer it over the detours option and am actually going to email detourst o see if they wouldn't mind building it.
It places the winch behind your oem bumper, no lose of approach angle, nor do you have to worry about cooling since there will be no winch blocking the radiator.
