Jr just bought this '74 Jeep. Has a 304 and a 3speed tranny with a PTO and Ramsey's winch running off the PTO.
Not sure yet what tranny is in it or the axle ratio.
Has a gas tank in the rear and a tank under the drivers seat w/a valve to switch tanks (dual tanks).
As long as you keep the H-balancer with the correct engine. Got to have a 304 flexplate/pressure plate and a 304 H-balancer on a 304 engine. Same with a 360 and 401. The same H-balancer can be used for a stick or automatic.
I started with a 304 in a CJ. Then I put a fresh 360 in that CJ, and now I am running a fresh 401 in a Wrangler. I would highly recomend the 360 if its in good shape or if you are going to rebuild one. The 304 was ok but the 360 was a major improvement and will cost the same to rebuild as the 304. Well worth the effort and you can find parts easier then the 401.
TH-350 is going to be expensive when you start adding adapters to bolt to an AMC. I put a 727 in mine out of a wagoneer and was able to bolt a DANA 300 to it with no adapter. A CJ-5 gets pretty short with an automatic especailly if you have to start adding adapters.
Agreed. We were going to swap out the entire drive train and go chevy w/a D20 on the back of the tranny and only use one adapter, OR, use a 208 case and no adapters.
I just need for him to decide what to do. would just be easier if he would go the 360 and I give him my TF-999 and I bolt in a TH-400 in the CJ8.
How are the DS clearance on a TH-400 w/a D300 and will a D300 bolt up behind the TH-400?
Dana 300 won't bolt up to a th-400. There is a stock adapter that is hard to find and not very strong for a Dana 20/th-400. I have a Quadratrac th-400 and was originally was going to use it, but I found out the after market adapter for a 300 or the 20 was over $500 and you pretty much had to rebuild the tranny to put the correct output shaft in the tranny. Thats when a found a guy with a 727 still in the factory crate for $500. It was a no brainer at that point. Bolted it to my 401 and I haven't had any trouble so far.
Not sure what trans he has in his '74 (3spd) but I do have a '86 258 in the shop that needs one cylinder. I wonder if his 3spd will bolt up to that motor. If not then he will have to rebuild my extra T-176 and find a D300.
TDC on compression stroke and 15psi of air = air coming out of oil filler tube. When I close off the oil filler tube I can hear a little coming out of the carb as well.
The plug we had in question (cyl 3 on the passenger side) had some oil on it and I did not even have the wire hooked up-oil was clean and that is the cyl I tested for the leak down.
So we are not going to mess w/the engine any more.
I have read many times that an automatic will not work in a 5 due to the OAL of the engine/trans/xfer case without having a very short rear driveshaft.
A long time ago I bought a 360/TF-999 w/this DS out of a CJ5 that was a DDriver, and the guy's dad owned a tranny shop. So my bet is that it will work.
We do have a few Cardon joints out of some J-10's but that might not work.
We have a drive-line shop here in town and we will take it to balance etc.
Also, w/Jr's cross member, it has two spacers on each side between the frame/cross member (factory), so if needed to make the DS straight in-line we can just add a spacer.
Ya, me to-it should but we are open to suggestions.
A guy had this setup in his CJ5 (AMC 360/TF-999/Dana 300) and he tore it down to rebuild and couldn't finish cause .....
He use to drive it all over so we will see if it works out w/this drive shaft.
