Saw a nice little puddle of gear oil under the Jeep today. Looks like my transfer case has mysteriously started to leak.
Looks like its coming out of the bottom plate. Anybody know if there is a gasket that can be bought to remedy the problem (and where to buy it). I have a 1971 Scrambler. Drivetrain is all stock. So, I think it's a Dana 300. Thanks!
Your guess is pretty good, but is there more coming from the rear output shaft?
It's doable on the hoof, but you really need to support the tranny and TC when you pull the skid plate. And clean the crap out of the mating surfaces with a razor and mineral spirits, use tacky sealant like Indian head gasket shellac on both sides of the gasket - just a little! Torque to specs.
I scraped off the old RTV. Sanded the little surface rust I had with about 400 grit which also roughed the surface for the RTV. I used permatex Ultra Black. You can get it at any parts store.
