Wrangler that has a whistle

THis is my first time on JeepForum.
I just bought a 2000 Wrangler with I6 and automatic and I get a whistle that is just annoying. It comes and goes depending on how far I'm pushing my gas pedal. It's a constant whistle, but goes away with more or less acceleration . It seems it is coming from the engine area, but I can't locate where. My son's 2002 Wrangler has the same whistle, but not as loud. Both Wranglers have Banks headers and exhaust and aftermarket throttle bodies, along with Inline 6 engines. The other I6 Wranglers I offroad with, don't have this whistle. My son doesn't mind it, but it drives me crazy. Any suggestions, and what to do about it?

My issue:
2001 Wrangler TJ with 200,030 miles. My rig is making a very high pitch whistle noise only during the winter months and when the jeep is coasting. At idle it fades away a little but when I accelerate the whistling starts. Spring summer and fall months it doesnt whistle. Just when its cold out. My check engine light is on with miss fire in bank 1. Thinking it's the manifold gasket or headers for both problems or the water pump for the squeal. Can't really tell what area it's coming from bc it's so damn loud. Help needed!

Solution:
Well I replaced the valve cover gasket and intake/exhaust manifold gasket with both fel-pro brand gaskets. Used copper silicone on the manifold gasket, tightened up the bolts and no more squeal. Cost me about $40 total for parts and took about 4 hours on a Saturday to complete and this was my first attempt. If I could do it you could also. 4 bolts holding the manifold from underneath were the hardest to get to. Also replaced the foil recall debris heat shield part cost about $5 from dealership. Gaskets I got from rockauto.com, copper silicone from autozone and these are the write ups I followed.

The belt tension and power steeling pump are different. Belt tensioner is on left side and used a 1/2 in ratchet to remove. Steering pump has 2 bolts on top 1 on bottom and easier to use a ratchet by going through the pulley.

Also was told just to try and tighten the bolts and see if that fixes it. Mostly the bolts near the fire wall.

If you have any questions let us know and we can help you out as much as possible.

Don't know. Both were bought used. I think just a year or so, on the 2000. I
took the air filter off and can hear the whistle coming from the aftermarket "EDGE" throttle body. is this normal?
Probably. Aftermarket intakes, throttle body spacers, and I guess throttle bodies tend to whistle. OEM puts R&D into quiet and comfort. Performance products put those qualities down the list. Some people may even equate that whistle with it sucking air and making power making it beneficial to that customer.

The source of your whistle is more than likely coming from the throttle body. I know you said both of them are aftermarket, but does there happen to be a spacer under either one? People have this crazy idea that making the air spin after it leaves the TB helps to "better atomize the fuel" or some other malarky. This is normally done by adding a spacer with a vortex pattern cut into it directly between the intake manifold and the throttle body, but in reality it only makes an annoying whistle. Some aftermarket TB's might have this vortex grooving cut into them at their base, so that would be something else to look for. Do you have a picture of either jeep's engine bay?

I have the edge tb also and I get a "sucking air" sound but not really a whistle, on initial start up.... interested if that will turn into an issue. Mine has about 10000 miles on it since install and hasn't made noise till just resent..... I'm with you though a noise like that would drive me nuts!:brickwall

Thanks for the suggestions. The whistle is coming from my throttle body and my wife and I a fed up with it. Should I just put the original back on, provided the PO still has it? Do I have to remove the Edge chip that the PO installed? Are they sold together?
