i came up with an idea that ive never seen or heard of for mounting a roof rack on a ZJ. I did it to mine and it works great and seems very strong, i can grab the roof rack and rock the jeep very hard by it and theres no wiggle in it. any interest in a write up?

It would be interesting to see what you did. When I installed mine, there was some rattling that drove me nuts. I bought some 1" wide black foam stick on insulation and stuck it to the cross members then clamped the rack down. Silent...no rattle.

I've collected the roof cross bars off my last 2 jz's, I now have six of them on my roof, not sure where I'm going with it though, ideas are welcome, right now they work great for transporting my 1/4 scale RC Planes, drop the wheels in between the bars and bungie them down and to the field I go, lots of rubber necks.

Pics or it didn't happen. Thats my plan when I put the 5.9 roof racks on a70eliminator. I have three or four crossbars. Always seem to throwing a ladder on the roof.

Nice.

You might think about welding a 3"X4" or so piece of flat plate to the back side of the new ( bolted on) cross members...standing on it's edge. That way it will extend up to the bottom of the new rack, where you could weld a threaded stud on the crossmember of the rack itself and then just slide the new rack into the holes on the plate, bolt it up and you're done. I guess you could even use large wing nuts if you preferred.

Or better yet, weld the plates on the new rack ( basket )itself and the studs on the new bolted on crossmembers. That way the plates wont interfere with anything when the basket isnt attached....duh..

Either way, I like the basket you built !
