will a older d35 xj axle with the ribbed drums work on a 98? both have same gear ratio. the 98 has a bad bearing and i can get the other axel for free so figured id just swap it.

Older d35's (86-89?) are not c clip axles. Not that it is any stronger. just won't lose the shaft if it breaks.

Assuming you have the c8.25, putting the d35 in is retarded regardless if it was free. Depending what bearing went in your 8.25 it might be easier to fix it then swap it out, like a wheel bearing.

I would think the year of the older d35 axle is needed for an answer. -although not from me. You might also need to check rear driveshaft compatibility too. It would be worth knowing the condition of the donor axle, including any whining it may of been making? lol

It should work besides xjs abs is pretty much useless from what I read

d35 is a d35 only difference is c clips and abs, driveshaft is the same length and brake line should mount the same

If it's got ribbed brake drums and they are 10" then it's not a D35 but a D44.
For free? Grab it and yes it will work and if you really have your heart set on ABS you can swap the tone rings onto the axles and drill the backing plate for the sensor. I think the drive shaft from a D35 to D44 are the same
