I bought an 88 YJ 4.2 straight 6 and I did drive it home... had issues with idle, and no brakes, but the only way I had it running was if it idled at 2k rpms... So, I tried setting timing, and setting idle but when at around 1k it'll just stay there for a few minutes... sputter and die out. So, I then rebuilt the carb, and did a nutter bypass, following the instructions I found on this forum, and I can't get it to start up anymore. Going crazy trying to get this thing going, help? By the way, vacuum lines are all over the place and some are plugged some aren't... I'm very new to working on vehicles.
The vauum port you have plugged in your pic is what I have to my dizzy. Also someone said check your adapter plates for leaks, I highly recommend that, that is where all my trouble was also. Sounds like the same problem you are having now.
What are adapter plates, and where do I find them? I'm a bit of a noob at this. I have plugged all the unused hoses, I set timing, set idle, its at about 1000... It will stay running but it kind of has a rough idle, its poppy sounding.
That is if he has a webber. Webbers have 2 adaptor plates. For a MC2100 &MC2150 motorcraft carbs there will be one. What is your timing set at? And have you checked your spark plugs? The gap?
I'm running the stock Carter Carb, and I haven't checked the gaps on my sparkplugs, I will do that tomorrow or tuesday. My timing is at 8 BTDC like said for the nutter.
No weber, It's all the stock parts pretty much, what directions was it for the carb? I just remember the wiring, then plugging the distributor vac line to do timing.
I have adjusted that, sorry, brain fart. Haha. If I had the cash I would get a new carb in a heart beat... I'm just trying to make this work till I can... But I always have it running and everything perfectly fine, with the sputtering however... then next day comes and its hard to get it to even start.
Alright. So I readjusted spark plug gaps to .030. They were all aroun .040. But I'm still having the trouble I always have to get it started. The timing is set right. Idle is about 1k. But starting it always proves to be a big problem.
That's what they say. I had better luck with a Holley two barrel from a late 60s dodge v8 but lots of people like the motorcraft. It is a darn goodcarb
Yup just an adapter. Just about any ford has them, you'll want the non smog version which is the 2100. But either one will work. Also go an find the 1.08 venturi carb.
