Anyone ever replaced the lash adjusters on their 3.7L? I've got a pretty loud tick coming from the top end, thinking it's a lifter problem. The tick goes away after the engine reaches 1200 RPM or so, and is quieter when the engine is warm, but definitely still audible.
Does replacing the lash adjusters require removal of the head? Gonna pull the valve cover off that bank and check things out. Anyone have any suggestions as to what else could be causing the noise, something to look for, etc? Thanks in advance.
you replace with the head in place, but you need to remove the rocker arms. i believe it is harder to get the valve cover off on the pasenger side then replace the adjusters.
You might also try running some cleaner thru the engine first before going thru the effort. Adding 1qt of ATF, without overfilling your engine mind you, and let it run for 20-30 minutes. Then change your oil as normal. ATF is loaded with detergent, and is good for getting some of the gunk out that causes the lifter noise.
Don't think dirty valves are my problem. Engine has always run fine, did a long mountain bike trip recently - 450KM each way with a bunch of 4bying up mountain service roads, fully loaded with bikes and gear. Truck ran fine all weekend, but when I got home noticed a loud tick in the engine. So that tells me something definitely happened in there on the way back - collapsed lifter is my guess. I'm evaluating a couple options - there are a couple '02 sport, 5-speed, with a 100,000KM less on the odometer for $5000 in town, thinking I might just grab one, swap my lift into it and sell my '02 limited for cheap.
I've also heard that running a cleaner through an older engine can make valve noise worse, and cause engine leaks - sometimes the carbon deposits are the glue that hold an engine together..
I wasn't referring to dirty valves, just the lifters themselves. If you have a really dirty engine that has been neglected badly, then yes, running cleaner in it can cause issues. However if you take care of your jeep as you should be, its not an issue. It could be a bad lifter in general too.
THey are not hard to replace. There is a special tool, miller 8516 that makes the job a lot easier. It compresses the spring, the rocker comes out, you remove the HLA with your fingers and insert the new one. Compress spring and put rocker back in place.
Just make sure the piston is not at the top of it's stroke so you don't hit it with the valve. I rotated the engine by hand, when an exhaust valve was compressed by the cam (high point on the lobe) I replaced the intake HLA and when the intake was compressed by the cam I did the exhaust.
