I've searched on the forums, (here and others), and haven't found this non-issue yet...
My 94 ZJ is at 294,000 Miles and I'm prepping for the 300K mark. It'll be right on time for an Oil change, and general inspection, but what else should I "change out" at the same time?
What's been done in the last 2 Months:
Spark Plugs, SP Wires, Cap&Rotor, Ign Coil, cleaned battery terminals, and Oil change at 293K.
Already Planned for this summer:
Lift(7" IRO Longarm), SYE, new Oil pan seals(leaks 1 drop/min) when Lifting, and new bumpers.
Ohh, and the other thing Definately worth mentioning is that my Great Sister was the Previous Owner and my Entire family's Maintnence schedue is "Run it til it breaks, then get it fixed". I asked when the Spark Plugs were done prior, and they had NEVER been done in 293K Miles. I could tell they hadn't been done in at least 50K, but yeah...
I also have used SeaFoam to clean the fuel and oil systems directly before oil changes.
Engine is 4.0 I6 with no 'abnormal' sounds coming from it yet. Tranny is solid, and Air Filter was replaced last week as well.
Congrats on almost hitting 300,000. My 95 is at 310,000 with original 5.2 I would think you would want to service the trans and pull covers on axles inspect and refill. Change diff fluid.
I would also check the entire cooling system especially the radiator. Mine was rotting out at 165k and it spent mosy of Its life in the south and the past 5 years in a garage

My sister replaced the radiator when the deer hit the front end 2 years ago. When I pull the Front bumper, I'll be looking at it real good. It may get replaced, but its not leaking yet?!?
At 300k mine needed a third gear band, torque converter, got the dif fluids changed preventatively, had timing cover and valve cover gaskets replaced. And then shocks. Will yours need all this? I can't tell you over the internet but that's what I had to do hope it helps.
I know mine at 244000+ miles the valve cover gasket needs to be replaced and third gear is starting to slip a little, I have the 4.0 litre and 42re also i'd change the u-joints would need probably replacing too
I just thought about it, and my 3rd gear May be starting to slip a bit. Its Very sporadic and only for about 1/2 of one second. I'm assuming that the 3rd gear band, the only way to do that is to actually pull out the tranny and have a shop do it. Is there a "Easy way" to do it at home with basic mechanical ability, and Without having to pull the engine out at the same time...

Curious how people from New England are getting that many miles out of their jeep (AMCJAVELIN, 9859limited). I've got 220k on mine now, still runs like a champ. Put about 1000 miles on it this week. Just got back from a 300 mile trip to northern Vermont last night and it gave me no issues. But the "frame" is cracked in 2 places from rust (had it welded as a temp fix till I get my new jeep on the road) and bottoms of the A-Pillars are non-existent. If it wasn't for rusting out I'm curious how many miles I'd be able to get out of it.
My new jeep has 199k on it and it's at the point now where underneath you can tell its from New England but it's not rotted. I'd like to save this one before it's too late!
Bought t with 290k on it and it's been coated before but starting to show some minor rust on frame. Body a couple of spots too but other than that she's good.
Mines got minor rust underneath. I just bought it from its second owner who has had it since 97. It has spent its whole life in northern Virginia. Its in excellent shape for 310,000 miles.
I was at Home Depot tonight and in the Spray Paint section, they have Spray on Bed Liner and Undercarriage Sealant. Looked like that'd work for those spots that are starting to rust. Sides that, Pick up some sheetmetal and a welder... Picked up the can of Bed liner to try a few coatings randomly to see IF I like it better than the carpet/Plastic that I have now. I also saw a can of RED Spray on Engine Paint... Hmmm?!?!?
I have about 250,000 I think on mine. I've changed a lot... engine feels strong, but I'm sure I need to swap out the gaskets. I doubt that's ever been done.
in 174,000 miles, mine never had the spark plugs, wires, cap, or rotor replaced. im amazed it wasnt missing like crazy. IIRC the gaps on the plugs were something like 70 thou
I KNEW that I forgot to call someone last night! My dad(Either mine or my wifes) to tell them of the Ocasional Dying while moving. After changing out everything above, it has still happened. Course, not near as often, but this morning was when it died with my wife in the car and we both in frustration took it to the shop. Another $225 down the drain for a $60 part. Someday I'm going to have enough smarts to just get on the forums and go from there. It was the Distributer. The shop said that it was Barely making contact with the gearing below. I COULD have fixed that myself. Ohh well.
As an update, this past weekend we did a 1200mile trip around southern utah. Needless to say All was mountainous. New tranny is getting ordered ASAP. What fun!
Tranny ordered and set for the install. Guess i pull out our XJ and drive it for a couple weeks so that the ZJ can make it to the shop(NO garage or paved flat ground around).
