Can you paint diff covers without taking them off?

I am wanting to paint underneath my TJ to spruce it up a bit and stop the harsh salt from attacking it on the east coast. I bought the rustoleum spray that is meant for painting underneath a car. My main question is can I spray directly over the differential covers or will it make the bolts impossible to get off?

It won't have any effect on the bolts besides covering them with paint, but I imagine it'd be a huge PITA to mask everything off, and you're still likely to get overspray everywhere. Removing and replacing the cover is wicked easy, and it'll make painting it much less of a hassle. Plus, you'll get a chance to change you're differential fluid.

Yes you can paint it without removal. Rust-Oleum is a good choice for a quick job. The cleaner you get it the better. A wire brush is a good way to clean, then spray it off good with some brake-clean to remove oil. Brush or spray.

I will probably wait and do what you suggested LilyBay and change my diff fluid and take the covers off and paint them. I just recently changed my fluid down there so I will wait a bit longer to paint. I am going to be cleaning down there like you suggested though rj. Thanks!
