i am looking at 3 different yj one is a 93 with a 4.0 conversion with a aw4 auto tranny soft top half doors, one is a 95 with a 4 cyl. hard top hard doors with a 5 speed, and then a 91 4.2 5 speed with soft top and half doors my question is should i even consider the auto and does the hard top and hard doors out weight the 4 cyl vs the soft top with the 4.2l 5 speed if any one has some insite on the this please chime in thanks

The 91 is supposed to have a 4.0 in it as well. Personally I like hard tops better due to noise, and those darn zippers that always come off track. I also find the hard top holds in the heat a little better. Then there is always the issue of ripping your soft top. I also prefer the 6cyl over the 4 banger. Just my 2 cents

If the 91 has the 4.2 in it, run away from it. You can always buy a different top. But it takes some work to get a aw4 under a jeep the right way.
So of the ones you posted I would go for the 93 cause if done right, that combo of engine and trans is a good one.

Why run away from it? I have a 4.2 and it runs great! Albeit, mine is carbed but I love it. The 91 has multi port fuel injection. The 4.0L's came fuel injected starting in 91.

Between the '91 and '95, it would come down to mileage for me. What is the mileage on these vehicles?

not sure about the miles on the 93 or 91 but the 95 4cyl has 145,000 the 91 and 95 look to be in better shape four around the same price 4,000 but iam going to do my best hammering the prices down another question is that they all have 33 on them and the 95 and 93 have 4.10 and the 91 should have 3.07 3.54 or 3.73 i would like to run at least 33 but would like 35 should i worry about the 91 gearing with the straight 6 or will it be ok i have a buddy that has a 01 tj with 35 4.10 and 4cyl and seems to do fine but its no speed demon im not worried about the speed just and daily driver weekend worrier for now the 95 is a rio grande and 91 is a sahara i believe thank for the input

Here's a gear chart to check out: http://www.quadratec.com/jeep_knowledgebase/article-26.htm

As you can see, it kinda does matter what gears you have. If the 91 has 3.07 or 3.54 gears, fifth gear will be useless with 33s and 35 will be a nightmare. For me, that knocks the '91 right off the table, unless you don't mind swapping the front and rear axles for ones with 4.10 gears.

On this note, I would scrap the 4 banger, as well. That leaves the 4.0 with auto trans. Personally, I don't get the point of a Wrangler with Auto trans. Although it can come in real handy if its a DD, you live in the city, and you are always dealing with rush hour traffic. Double check the mileage on that transmission. Anyways, that's my 2c.

Because if someone went to the trouble to take out the fuel injected engine and put in the carbed 4.2.
I hate that carbed crap. off angles offroad and the engine dies. Hit a bump too hard, engine dies, And unless they changed to a better carb, the stock one is worthless. I hate carbs
Is that what happened? Someone went through the trouble to remove the fuel injection? I don't get it. The original Carter carb is not very good. That's why I swapped mine out with a MC 2150, did the nutter, and upgraded the ignition. It runs much, much better now. I've had no problems with it. Not to mention, it is way easier to tune a carb than FI.

My YJ has the AW4 swapped in and I love it. Drove a manual for about 10 years and now I don't think I would ever go back from the auto (unless it was a sports car or something similar.) In fact yesterday I went out wheeling on a narrow, rutty, mountain trail that was completely iced up under the snow. We made it about half way though the trail when we hit a hill that was so icy neither of us could make it over. We ended up having to back down the trail for about 30 mins to get to a spot where we could turn around.

Because of the ice and snow I had to pump the breaks the entire ride down to prevent the tires from locking up and going into an uncontrolled, backwards slide. When we finally got turned around all I could think of was "god with a 5 or 6 speed I don't think I could have done that! I would have stalled it over and over trying to frantically work the brakes, clutch, and gas while trying to keep from sliding off the side of the mountain. No thanks!"

As far as full doors, half doors, hard tops, and soft tops are concerned, that just comes down to personal preference. My TJ had both a hard top and a soft top when I bought it. Maybe a week after I got it home, I took the hard top off for the summer. Fall came and I put the soft top up. The hard top sat exactly where I left it for nearly 8 years...I never had a problem with the rag top and the hard top is just a PITA to take on and off (especially without help!) and awkward to store when its off. I had full doors on my TJ but always wished I had half doors. Now my YJ has half doors and I love them. They are just more "Jeep" to me. No other vehicle has half doors!

There's my .02
Cheers

The 95 has other a less obvious advantage. The 95 has gavantized body and frame. The other consideration is where you live. Trying to climb any grades with the 2.5L will drive you nuts with the 2.5L. The 4.0L or 4.2L would be better suited for Oregon driving. You are dealing with PO mods on the 1 and 3. If you think you can deal with the slow crawl of the 2.5L then the 95. If not then the 93.

I have a 4.0 automatic. Love it and would not trade for manual. I did Black Bear Pass and Redcone (Before it was repaired) in Colorado. Also use my Jeep on some huge dunes. No manual for me.

I can respect that. I really didnt mean to come off as ignorant when I said I can't imagine an auto Wrangler. I'm not being apologetic, just explaining myself. I really have no reference because my YJ is the only Wrangler I've owned, since I bought it new in '89. That's all. Actually, the idea of not having to shift is nice. My z71 is auto and I love it.

No problem. I didn't take it like that anyway. But I am serious about automatics. They can be built to handle pretty much any amount of hp. Keep them cool and the fluid clean and you have an ultra reliable trans. Think about an automatic in the mud. Plant your foot and keep the tires spinning, lose momentum and it will downshift without any loss in momentum. Climb a dune, near the top need to slow down but not miss a gear. Automatics never miss. The only downside I can think of is added weight. But the weight is down low.

Romp n go...

Everything is a trade off.
