The Jeep With No Name Teardown and Rebuild (Lots of Pics)

Okay folks, we finally had a day of great weather, temperature was lowest it's been in months, so I decided to finally start the teardown on The Jeep With No Name. The plan is to restore it back to original showroom condition. I want it to look as nice as Keith460's. This build is going to take years, so be patient. I took a load of pictures today; let me know what I'm doing right, or what I could be doing smarter.

Thanks, Jim. Overall, I am extremely pleased with how it turned out, vs how it looked before......1000% better, but not perfect.

Then again, were the frames 100% perfect, when AMC was putting them together? I wonder.

So just the glass broke? I don't understand. Glass can be replaced at a glass shop easily... probably cost a bit more because it is round. Take the bezel to the shop... a new piece can be cut using it. I can send you a Speedo glass or an entire Speedo if needed. Let me know...

Here's a pic for your viewing pleasure. Hope it makes you laugh! Custom vinyl sticker on his tailgate.

I don't know if I broke the speedo or not...the whole thing fell out of my hand. If you have one that resembles this, I sure would appreciate it Scott.

Fred, to check the speedometer. Reinstall the cable, clamp the other end in a variable speed drill. Pull the trigger slowly. I can't remember which direction they spin, if the needle drops past zero, go the other way. You can also spin the small brass part on the back to determine rotation, watch the needle when you turn it

Bill,

Tried spinning the speedo.....no dice....oh well.

On a GREAT note, I did manage to score this eBay.....guy only had one, though...but I'm now one step closer to an original interior.

Thanks, Scott.

I really don't know what I'd do without my Jeep brothers...you guys have been phenomenal in helping me over the past year and a half.....can't believe I've had this CJ that long already...can't believe I bought Frankenjeep back in '10.

rah2eq, ask away and I'll try to help as much as possible.

I just read every page of this thread over the past couple of days. I'm picking up my 1978 CJ5 tomorrow afternoon, I may be PMing you frequently to tap your OCD Jeep details!

Fred, great find on the seats! I've been looking on cragslist locally with no luck finding short backs. The one I did find looked good on the outside but the frames (what I could see) were rusty enough that I was afraid to buy them. How do your frames look?

Fred, I was refering to the frame inside the seat. You really can't see much of it without tearing the seat apart. The ones I looked at were very rusty to the point of crumbling where the hog ties connected the fabric to the frame. The seats looked like they had been exposed to the weather for some time.

Here are the pics, Fred. I started to clean it up and went with another that I had that was easier. I have already wire-wheeled most of the black paint off the bezel. There is still some left. Everything in it works. The case is rusty, but you are no rookie with rust, so I believe you can clean it up. You will need to for good light socket contact. There are lots of little hairline cracks in the crystal (not sure if you actually call it a crystal, but you know what I mean). I don't know if it is original or not... it appears to be.

Scott, thanks for the pics. That speedo has the KPH numbers on it, so I think it's for '78-'79...mine only has the MPH.

No biggie, I found two on ePay that will work, but I really do appreciate your offer.

Transmission on the BMW went T.U....$1800-$3000, so I decided to order a Christmas present for Brooke.

What can I say, she jingles my bells!

Got my first original Black Wellington Vinyl seat.....zero rips or wear....this thing must have been pulled out right of the CJ, after it was purchased.

Should get the 2nd seat tomorrow, hopefully.

Here's a pic. I spent about 1/2 hr. cleaning it up, because you could tell that it had been in storage for quite a while, but it cleaned up real nice.

HAHAHAHAHA, actually, I just got the 2nd seat last night and it's stamped "17 FEB 77"....it's in even better condition than the first, with much more grain than the other seat, so I'm pretty stoked. What's interesting is that one seat is slightly taller than the other.

Also notice that the design on the right seat follows all the way down the front bottom part of the seat, whereas the one on the left stops and the bolster wraps all the way around.....this is where having original sales brochures helps....the seat on the left is for a '78 and up; the seat on the right is for a '76-'77....minor differentiation so, technically, you're right Ernie.
