jammed starter???

since this is not for a Jeep, sorry if I'm in the wrong category and please move this if it is

anyways, my sister's boyfriend has a 91 mustang and doesn't know much about cars. he went to start it the other day and nothing would happen, no noise at all. he popped the clutch and gets a loud grinding noise but it does drive with reduced power and he was able to get it home

starting at the simplest solution first, I went over right before it got dark tonight and took a look, the starter (along with everything else) makes no noise at all when turning the key, so my theory, make fun of me if it makes no sense, is that the starter is stuck in an engaged position, causing it not to start, and causing the grinding noise when he does drive it. does that make any sense?

he's all bummed out thinking he blew his motor, but if that's the case wouldn't the starter try to engaged when turning the key though?

turning the key does nothing though, and the starter makes no noise, any chance it could be burnt out and engaged? causing no start, no starter noise, and a grinding when driving after popping the clutch?

that's what I'm thinking too, thanks for the help man! now if only it was on a Jeep so I could get to the damn thing, I got the bottom bolt off no problem, the top one I've tried everything. I felt like an idiot not being able to remove a starter haha
