i know there has been a recent increase in the guys who are running smaller then an ome lift with 285s on their rig and since theres not too many in the wheel/combo sticky.. if you guys could as to be so kind to post some pictures of your rig and your lift... and what did you have to do to get them in there ??

thanks fellas ! :cheers2:

I was just thinking 285/60/18's till I saw how much width it would add.

Hypothetically at least, I think with a 0 offset rim, 2inch lift, Bilsteins, strut spacers, and MLL's on the back, it'd work. Thats what I was considering doing. Naturally you'd have to take care of the pinch weld, and likely have to do bumpstop extensions in the back and possibly the fender lip mod.... but I think it'd be doable. I just decided, at this point, I dont wanna go through all that effort.

couple things to look into with the 285s- bumpstops in the rear and your pinch welds. the more i look at 285s, its prob going to be more of a cosmetic enhancement than a functional enhancement...

i think i lived out west where the wheeling was more flat surfaces and less muddy, etc...- id do 285s in a heartbeat. but here on the east coast, the amount of moisture, mud, rocks, etc at the ORPs around here, flexing is inevitable.

Cosmetic - exactly. If a guy just wants to fit thebiggest tire the wheel well will accommodate the possibilities will be less limited. But if you want it to be functionally wheelable you have to consider up travel during flex. If you have to extend your bump stops to the point of minimal uptravel in order to stay out of your wheel well you may as well drop the Jeep and get a street performance suspension setup with big rims and low profile meats.

You can look in my gallery. i just did it with 285 nittos. yes you do not get much flex room but it is still functional with all the pinch and rear fender mod. its a little bit of work but i think its worth it for the clearance. i would suggest the rear bump stop modd tho. i stuff the tire in the well a little to often but no real damage. i did my own mod to the front to make it not rub at all. after folding down the pinch weld and sealing it. i cut about an inch of the plastic fender out then kinda went up a little on the plastic bubble and back down right where the plastic door trim is.(be careful when you start the cut from the back, if you cut to high at first you will expose the frame hole and will probably need to plug it) then took a black sheet metal screw and pinned the back portion up against the firewall.(i put the screw high enough and sunk it into the plastic a bit to make sure it does not grab tire) then on the exposed wheel well i sprayed basically rhino liner to blend with the plastic. looks good plus you cant even really see in there with such a big tire. look at omelets rear fender mod for the back. i have done it, but i still think i need the longer bump stop.

i know all of that is going to be kinda jumbled and a mess sorry. i would love to post pics on the thread but cant figure out how to do it with out loading it to my gallery first???

hope that helps a little bit lol

I wouldn't be so quick to downloplay the practicality of 285's on a 2" lift or less. For those who wheel 3x's a year, then 285's are not in your best interest. But if your on the trail once a month or more (at least that is my justification), it has it's advantages and it's simple really. Bigger meats add clearance while enabling you to traverse larger obstacles. It can be the differences between your tire acting like it's hitting a wall, or it acting like you just jumped over a rock.

How useful is it on 3.7's w/out 4lo? That's something that I'm still testing. trying to get out to Uwharrie on a dry day so I can do some rocks.

There's no doubt bigger meats will get you over bigger stuff, but like I said in my first post in the thread: it's a catch 22 IMO. Take your rig for example, AJ, would you have put 285's on if you hadn't gained more room in the wheel wells with the Load Levelers?
Since my lift install back in Sept. I've been out at least once a month on the trails. I have to say the OME HD/265's is a good combo - I def want to go to 285's but right now that seems like it would compromise my wheel wells (maybe it wouldn't - I don't know). I had some slight to moderate rubbing f/r on the trails before I modded the p/w and rear fender. Each time out I have tried new things and pushed a little more than the time before. To the point the p/w and rear fender mods were inevitable. But I see guys w/ bb's adding MLL's to get a good stance and they look great with 265's - it just seems 285's would fill up so much of the wheel well that there wouldn't be room for movement and now the suspension isn't being maximized. (Although andrew posted some pics with nice flex on 285's).
I don't know, this is a great thread and discussion and I'm def still learning what is possible and what those possibilies are capable of - I just think with my current set-up 285's would get stuffed and rub all the time out on the trails.
But then again........I can't say with certainty unless I tried it.

you have sawys on and no rub? hmmm you have MLL's? also it looks like you are on flat ground. pictures always look screwy.

anyone think i can fit some 285's w only 1'' wheel spacer, i was also thinkn 285 65's.. 32s. given i do pinch mod. plus mll's
you would still run into the problem of width with the 285/65's if there's any problem at all, as long as you dont full lock the wheel all the time and your alignment is good i think you'd be good to go.

Hey guys im new to jeeps. I have a 05 limited 4.7. With the stock chrome rims. I just ordered a rro 2.25 lift. Will i be able to fit 285s on the stock rim? And if so will i still be able to go offroading without scraping out my fender walls? If im on an angle or rocks? Or blasting through some mud? I searched some threads but couldnt find the answers im looking for thanks!
