Ok, I know this is a common problem and us Jeep Owners just have to learn to live with it, but I need to vent a little so I'll feel better and also give the Newbiews a heads up.

We have a 07 Jeep Liberty that we purchased one year ago and I've had the Driver Rear Window Regulator replaced Twice from the Dealership and the Passenger Rear Window Regulator replaced Once. Last night the Drivers-side Rear Window Regulator broke again, causing the window to slide down about half way. It rained last night and this morning the back seat and floor was covered with water not to mention my briefcase and all its contents. This will be the THIRD time for this window to be replaced. All this in just the 1 year that we've owned it. Hmmm??? But I'm still a Jeep Diehard.

I believe the Factory has fixed this problem but I have a feeling the Dealership is still replacing the Window Regulator only with the same revision.
(In other words, another one that will break in about 6months and its back to the dealership).

It appears this is a common problem with 1st Gen Jeep Libertys and Chrylser knows about it, they just don't want to issue a Recall because they feel it will costs too much. (I don't think they're taking in consideration what this is doing from a Marketing standpoint). Anyone I talk to I tell them to get a outside warranty (like WarrantyDirect) and make sure they buy their house next to a Jeep Dealership.

And on.... I hear the problem is a Little Plastic Connector that attaches the Cable to the Bracket. Had it been made out of anything but Cheap Plastic, it would hold up like a 57' Chevy Window. But to save some Costs in building the Jepp Libertys, Chrylser decided to save $.27 cents on this cheap plastic cable connector and spend $600. dollars on replacing 20% of all their cars. Now....I'm not a math whiz.....but even with basic math, I can see the writing on the wall here.

Ok, e'nuff grumbling.... Some action. I'm going to ask the dealership if I can have the old parts, even if I have to buy them back from them, so I can ReDesign a new Metal Connector and Metal Guide Sleeve.

If the Dealer refuses, then I'll go to Plan B. I'll buy several rolls of Duct Tape, use my Sawzall to make a 10" slit through the outside of my door all the way through to the inside. Then I'll loop several rolls of Duct Tap over the window, down along the door to the slit, through to the inside and back around about 20 times. If someone in the back needs the window open, I can simply pull over, cut the duct tape, let the window fall to the bottom and Walaa. (Jeff Foxworthy would be so proud of me). I might even tape a Roll of Duct Tape on the front of the hood as a Jeep Hood Ornament. If we all do that, then when we pass each other out there on that long desert highway, we'll know who our Regulator Brothers and Sisters are. Just honk and hold up how many times you've had your Jeep Liberty Windows fixed.

ps. For you old timers out there, please don't hold up both hands and feet.

As a temporary solution, I just opened the door panel up and pushed the glass up the track. I zip-tied the part that runs on the track so that it stays in place.

Been like that on two of my windows for months now, I'm just too lazy/cheap to buy a metal part... but I will eventually.

Here's the scoop...

I've had two of the four regulators/stuff replaced at different times. Last week back to the shop to replace a failed number three.

In my visit for the third... The Jeep service folks reported there was a "new" replacement repair kit for the problem. This superseded 23-026-10.

As a result... They replace all four regulators/stuff with the "new" repair kits.

Thoughts?

The warranty (extension) bulletin D-10-36 related to the service bulletin 23-026-10 was revised November 2, 2011 in order to communicate claim processing guidelines to ensure consistent claim processing across all dealerships.

There are 2 different service bulletins:

23‐026‐10 for 2006 model year built after March 15,
2006 through the 2007 model year
23‐002‐11 for 2002 model year through 2006 model
year built up to March 15, 2006.

Not sure specifically what you are talking about - the only vehicle you show on your Jeep Space is a 1990 Grand Wagoneer with a V8.

I have this problem on my Lady's '03 Liberty. I've never been a fan of power windows anyway because it's just more to go wrong. I've purchased the Steiger kit, but just waiting for the right time to do it. Her driver window works, just chatters when the window reaches fully closed position.

I just called a jeep dealership and explained my problem, which was both of my rear windows dropped into the door, they ran my vin # and said to bring it in that it would all be covered. I have a 2007 jeep liberty. They also gave me a number to get reimbursed for the driver door I already paid for. Ill let you know how that goes after I call.:cheers2:

I just changed the third out of four windows out to the Stieger part. Worth the money, took me about an hour. Waiting for the front driver window to fail and I will change that one. Knew of the problem from this site and went ahead and bought all four at the same time.

Flaws in Window Regulators

I too believe that Jeep is well aware that their window regulators are faulty and also refuse to repair them at no cost because its technically not a life-threatening safety issue. They are well aware that it will be a costly venture. I have had my Jeep Liberty for 8 years and have replaced two windows so far due to faulty regulators and my mechanic tellls me to look forward to a third.

I got the Steiger part, took the door apart to put it on. Then I discovered that the problem was not a plastic regulator (it is made of metal). The problem with our window is the tube that encases the cable that does the lifting. If that tube is broken, at least between the motor and top of the slide, the window will go up but not down. So Jeep has a plastic part taking pressure from the window mechanism. That is a recipe for disaster. I guess I'll have to get a replacement unit form eBay ($64).

I know this is an old thread, but it was the first link I found on Google with useful info. I figured I should add some relevant information from my own experience.

I had my right rear window fall down on me. Thanks to this thread I found out about the extended warranty on them and drove it to my nearest jeep dealer to get it fixed. Unfortunately my issue was not the lift plate. The cable itself had snapped, so it wasn't covered.

I did talk to the mechanic a bit who was working on it though. He told me he has had to replace not just the old plates but a lot of the new style lift plates as well. I'm thinking if I have issues again ill just open it up myself to see if it is the plate. If it is, I will just order the Steiger replacement since the mechanic didn't have anything nice to say about the new ones either.

Jeep lost my loyalty

I have owned several jeeps over the past two decades, but I don't know if I'll buy another one. The rear window assembly broke on my liberty FOR THE SEVENTH TIME! This time I was hundred of miles from home with firearms in the vehicle and no way to secure them. Chrysler used to argue with me about fixing the window but would eventually do it. They say they'll repair it this time, too. But its not just the way Chrysler has decided to deal with this common problem that bothers me, that is, just ignore it and keep paying for repairs. Its the attitude of, "oh, well....its a known problem." Seven repairs have cost me time, money, and frustration. And, while they no longer argue about paying for the repair, Chrysler, the Dealershship, the Service Manager, repair donkeys...all of them...don't seem the least bit troubled by it. No apologies, nothing about fixing it for good, no concern at all. I took my jeep to the Service Department by appointment today. They told me they had the part to fix it. But, after waiting for over an hour, I was told they didn't have the part and I would need to make another appointment. Not an apology, not a thankyou, not a kiss my *** and got to hell. I have calculated that one of my windows on my jeep breaks about every 12,000 miles. The Liberty is just not that good of a car to keep dealing with this. Maybe jeep and chysler isn't either.

Another one bits the dust. I had the right rear window fail about a month ago. I called the JEEP dealer and they quoted me 300 bucks for the part. I called Dodge and was quoted 195 bucks. I went online and see there are after market parts available any where 70 bucks on up.

At least there are some after market parts for less than half of what the dealer wants. This will be the 5th one to be replaced in a vehicle with less than 90,000 miles. If I every get my hands on the design engineer who decided to use plastic in this assy, well let just say I would have a few choice words for him.

My wife's '06 right rear just went out yesterday. I saw that they revised the warranty, but I believe hers was built prior to 3/15/06. Does this mean they will not fix it under warranty (it was purchased 7/30/06)? Can someone confirm this?

For some reason I believe that this vehicle sat on lots for awhile and I seem to recall a build date of late 2005. We got it during a employee pricing + rebates promotion mid-summer of '06. I like the Steiger part, and will go with that, but if I can get them to fix it for free (all windows) then I'll let them do it and save myself the time, money, and effort (until it breaks in the future).

Thanks!

2007 jeep Liberty rear windows dropped

Just wanted to give a bit of good news to this annoying problem with the window regulators failing. About 5 months ago my drivers side rear window dropped about halfway, the motor no longer worked and I had to push it up and duct tape it. I took it to a shop and was quoted $360 to fix it....ummmm no...So I continued the duct tape routine. Then last week the other rear window dropped...all the way into the door...during a rain storm which not only soaked the interior but left lovely buds from a tree all over the inside of the car, and of course stained the fabulous upholstery as usual. Now I was pissed...so I duct taped that one as well and started reading the posts in here to see if there was anything I could do.

Well there was...there seems to be a question of coverage for this rampant problem from Chrysler. I can tell you for sure if you are within 7 years of the original purchase date it will be covered. I called Chrysler and gave them my VIN # and they said I qualify for the extended warranty until 4/18/14 so if they break again in the next year it will also be covered. The problem that is most common and is what was wrong with mine was the lift plates and that is what is covered in the extended warranty.

It just so happens that there is also a recall on the 2007 for the L27 rear suspension lower control arms....so yesterday I took mine in and they fixed the control arm, both rear windows, and checked and lubed the front windows...for FREE!

Hope this post helps, if you're having the same problem I had it's definitely worth checking into and if you were unaware of the control arm recall go get that fixed asap. Happy Jeeping to You All!!

Thank you to all that posted. 2006 Jeep Liberty just had the window break a few days ago which husband taped up. Getting in today when he closed the door the window shattered. Reading the responses here and knowing this is an ongoing problem will make it easier when talking to a dealer.

Did the actual motor go out or did the clip break? If the clip just broke, then get the steiger part and return the dealer part.

Yes the new regulators require a new window... new design.

Anyond having this problem...chrysler offers a new lift bracket with cable for 60$ now and you do not have to replace window anymore. You just bend the end with pliers and remove the stopper, then temporarily hook regulator back to cars power plug and power the old cable and bracket out....then slide the new one in with grease and power it back in....then reinstall repaired regulator. Hope this helps !
