so my engine is bad in my 1996 xj its a HO, dunno if that changes much, my FIL has a 4.0 with 122000 from his 1990 mj that he said i can have if it fits. his isnt a HO. just wondering if anyone knew if this older motor will bolt up fine to my jeep. i figure i might have to switch sensors or something up top. does anyone know what all is involved with that, like what i will have to swap or mod in order for things to fit correctly? would really help right now if i can use this free engine. i did search but couldnt find my situation specific info, if someone at least knows where i could go to find this info that would be great alone! thanks all!!

The block should swap over with out much problem. You would have to swap over everything from you 96 including the distributor and flexplate with the tone ring for the obd2 for the fuel injection. Your 96 is a obd2 and the 90 would be a renix injection. They are not even close to being the same. I have never tried it but you may have to mod the 96 intake to fit a renix head. Your 96 throttle body will not bolt on to a renix intake. May be more of a pain than it is worth.

wont my 96 intake manifold bolt up to it? i thought that was a popular slight upgrade mod people did, then i would be able to fit my throttle body on it. also what is this tone ring? i heard i had to switch the fle plate but that didnt seem too big a deal since i was already gonna have both motors out.

The tone ring is part of the flywheel/flexplate (it is what the cps reads), just use the one from 96. The renix head is closer to a 258 head at the intake ports. If you look at the head when you take off the intake the ports are flat not raised like the HO is, and across the top is not flat but the corners will be hogged out for the injectors. Now you can mod the manifold at the alignment pins from a obd1 or 2 to fit a 258 head so I don't see why you cant do the same for the renix head, but it does make me wonder what exhaust manifold you would need. I try to avoid renix stuff, not a lot of support around any more for them.
