Like the title says. Although I love rock crawlers, chopped and dropped, I am thinking of taking my LJ into an Overland style build. One that comes to mind is LO2AY 2:drool:

There was a blog I was following a couple years back, a guy took a 4 cylinder TJ all over the place, Canada, US, South America. I can't remember his name or the blog, but it shows with the right planning, a TJ most certainly can be used to travel long distances.

Here's my niner with a few add-ons.
Will be installing some tail light guards later this week, also I'm having a few items powder coated along with some touchup paint bring done.

Thinking about making a removal swing out gas can carrier that also has a small storage box between the gas cans.
I made this up with Photoshop.

When you swing it out there will be some places for putting an umbrella post through.
I want to be able set up in a few minutes and pack up just as fast.
Behind the small storage box there will be a place for setting an ice chest when camping, which the top of an ice chest also makes for a good little table.

Nice photoshop job!

I got rid of my TJ and have the KJ for "expedition" related space, towing, mpg, etc. It tows 5k and fits all my mtb and kayak crap. I wanted the diesel for extended range but fell in love with the 65th anniversary model. I still get 20mpg with a 20.5 gallon tank though :2thumbsup: This fancy electronic torque transfer stuff is pretty neat too. My open diff TJ couldn't get some of the places this does.

Dude, this is awesome. I have to say, with the rust issues of TJs in New England, and guys charging $10K+ for 100,000 miles TJs that aren't a rotbox, I've considered the KJ.... My TJ is getting rough at 235K miles.

There's quite a few low-mileage KJs on the local craigslist, and I mainly use my TJ for DD and camping and such... Maybe...

Nice Jeep, man.

I have a roof basket, but only put it on when I need it (doesn't fit in the garage with it on). It increases wind noise and drops mpg 1-2 depending on the speed your traveling. Probably takes off like 3mpg at 85+mph.

My roof rack is low profile with small lights and has not affected the gas mileage.
I had to do some small modifications cleaning up welds and filling in under the light mounting brackets to stop the wind noise.

I got all my camping gear loaded in my jeep for spending 3 day at the King of the Hammers Event.
Will be sleeping in the back of the jeep, got a nice 3" foam pad to sleep on, and will be doing a little trick of hanging a lightweight nylon tarp inside of the jeep for privacy and warmth.
The trick is to use some small spring loaded clamps and clamp the tarp to the rear hatch struts and the handles over the back doors. So now the tarp covers the ceiling and windows.
This is like putting a tent inside of your vehicle.
I will post some photos when I get back.
