haha no i didnt, i actually think ill be getting lite dots but i thought they looked cool and indestructible...and if you wanted then badly enough a converter could be made or bought.heck there are AC/DC converters all over
tell me about it. my humvee is sitting outside the tent now with a broken one. my ground guide wasn't paying attention and backed me into a water buffalo...:rofl::rofl::rofl:
Leds aren't like light bulbs... when they turn on, the have no internal resistance so there is resistor in line that limits the current going through it. The same LED will work with 1V or 1000V just depending on the value of the resistor.
If you wanted to do the work, you could always change the resistors and make them work for 12V. Assuming that you can take them apart and get to the resistors and unsolder them then solder new ones in. Resistors are cheap.
I'm sure they'd light up on 12V but prolly not bright enough to use as brake lights in the daytime.
If I'm not mistaken, those are Kascar-style housings...and according to an article I've seen on the web, they can be had in 12- or 24-volt configurations, and also with either LED or conventional bulbs.
we tried hooking up 24v Trucklite LED headlights to 12v and they didnt work... so if anyone figures out how to change the resistors please do a write up and take pics and list what resistors u used...
I am still planning on putting them on my TJ, I just didn't think getting them to Germany would be such a pain in the rear. I head back Stateside soon. I have some other things to do to the TJ before I get these but at least it is a move in the right direction.
I would just order some from truck lite that come in 12 volt. Looking at the price on ebay, just pay what truck lite wants and you don't have to figure out how to make them work. and you will save a few bucks.
Are you going to run the black outs? I don't know why you would, but it would be a nice touch. Telling you from experience, the first things to go on those lights......the ground. For reason from standard bulb to LED, they always failed at the ground. Replaced a lot of those in Iraq. I have some 24V 7" Headlamps my shop foreman let me swipe before I got on the bird back in Al Kut. Still don't know how I'm going to wire those up. I'm not changing my system to 24V. But I can't let these go to waste. Just too nice.
For those of you like sxysouthtx, a dc to dc converter installed in the cab like this may work for powering those 24 volt surplus items. Check out the military grade ones at the left of the chart. these are a bit on the pricey side, but if you do enough searching your bound to find a reasonably priced unit.
Thanks but I can't take credit for this job. I just don't have the time so a gave them to a good friend that has a small fab shop in Baltimore. The guy is amazing!
Thanks bro. I really like them. I plan to change all lights I have over to the LED's on the Willys also. It just makes sense. It pulls less power and is brighter, function over form.
Here is a pic of the cj at what is left of Fort Holabird Baltimore City. ( jeep texting area for WW2)
Here you can see 2 of the 3 cull climbs behind us. Check out my YouTube link for the videos.
Thanks. I'm also thinking about doing all LED lamps for everything else. And changing everything on my cj2a to LED. It will pull way less power and be way brighter.
Passenger side done. He still needs to do a little cleaning but he's working on the easier driver side.
