Well i finally think i have most of the parts and tools to start upgrading the yj. The plan is to change the gearing from 3.54 to 4.10,add aussies front and back.,replace the dana 35 with a 44,slipyoke eliminator, home made posilock,Add another 2" off lift to the existing 4" lift with 6" booms and lowering the spring perches 2".Also going to install a hand throttle, replace the dana 30 wheel joints ,use a cut down front driveline from a xj for the rear of the yj.i need to repaint at least the right front fender or maybe the whole jeep.Ill try to post pics as i go.

You sir have an amazing build here. Cant believe I have not come accross it before. You might get some problems over time with that orange air hose. Gets to hot and lets out air at each connection or just will burst. Other than that I cant tell you to much you dont seem to already know from your fabrication skills. lol, Great work. Love the new tire carrier with the rack and gas cans.

thanks for the comments and the help in the other thread.

thanks, i havnt done any work one it for a while. i still need to pick up another ac pump. It,s been fun just wheeling and enjoying the fruits of my labor.

I think it might be time for that junkyard york bracket!

#357 ·
i might go that direction, but im taking a car to the local(nothins local here) junk yard today. ill try one more sanden pump b4 i go york. ill pull it apart and tap and plug a hole that was suggested by a thread i read. i guess it stops a lot of the oil from leaving when its plugged. im still in the research mode. one thing for sure is i wont be reving it anymore when i fill my tires. it does fine at idle anyway.

ok, i got a replacement pump for my air compressor. i tore the old one apart to see how hard it was to work on before i dug into the new one. its a lot easier than i thought. The pump has 5 pistons that act like ten. Each end of the piston is its on piston that fits into a bore. there are reed valves at each end. The pistons are moved up and done by a rotating disc that is mounted on an angle to the center shaft. there are only two needle bearings on the inside, and not any springs that will fly all over as you might think there would be. i could see my pump was starting to seize where the piston rides on the disc. the bearings were fine, and the piston to bore didnt look bad. I scribed lines on case and center bore housing as i took the new on apart. i greased the pistons, bores, disc's and bearings. i then put it back together. Before i hooked up the hoses ,i ran it to see if a lot of grease would come out the output hole. none did to my suprise! I went ahead and turned the oiler around and mounted it closer to the pump as suggested earlier. i couldnt find the hole that was to be tapped and plugged that i read about, i think this pump is different. To my knowlege, im the only one running a tarus pump. it seems to be working fine for now, only time will tell.

im getting ready for pismo next week. i think ill get some new rear u bolts and add a leaf from the old pro comp springs onto the new rc springs. the rc springs work great untill i put all the crap i take on the trail rides, it looks like im going up hill all the time when im loaded! i will also change my rear diff fluid b4 the trip.

i heard a rubbing noise from the rear brake and took the drum off to take a peak. the shoe retainer some how poped off and the pieces wedged into the shoes. it ruined the drum and shoes. i have never had this happen before . i was wishing it was a pebble ,but no such luc. off to the parts store

not to many people stock a rear drum for an 1987 d44. i did find one . i m getting a new brake parts kit as well ,with new springs for both sides.

#362 ·
while i had the jeep up i decided to address the rear spring pack(again) the rc rear springs have 4 leafs in the pac. i run with a lot af weight so the 4" springs dont cut it. i took the short lower spring from my old pro comp spring and added it to the rc springs. it raised it up about 1 - 1/4". now i think its finally dialed in. i wont be able to test it untill i get the break parts on. i hope it wont be to stiff. when i jump on the back it seems to compress just fine. i now have a 5 pac in the back.

the jeep was red already and it needs redone. i was just thinking yesterday i need to do the rest of it.

#366 ·
i would wet sand it with 320, and then use spot body putty on th chips and scratches, and then sand the putty, then prime the bare and putty spots, then spray. then remove the runs!

#367 ·
i put the new shoes, springs, wheel cylinder, and drum on today and test drove the custom leaf spring pack. the brakes are great now and the jeep rides just a little stiffer but not bad. i cant wait to load it down and see if i still have clearance between the flair and tire. one 25 cent spring retainer cost me $140.

ok thanks, ill keep an eye out or should i say ear out for it slipping. when you get the oiler worked out come back here and let me know your findings , thanks . it seems that nothin ever works right the first time. my whole jeep is kind of trail and error. Its getting there tho.

Pismo beach was fun, i did break my track bar. i might not put it back on becuase i might not need it after adding the extra leaf spring.

Nice job on the over all of the jeep. I like how you used what you have to make things for it.

#375 ·
im just cheap, and cheap makes you creative.

wow its been a long time since Ive posted anything about my jeep. i haven't wheeled or worked on it until today. I'm planning a 3 day trip to loon lake and a in and out on the Rubicon trail. since I'm bringing my boat i had to wire the jeep for trailer lights. i found it easy to get to the wires by taking off the gas filler plate. i need to reattach the anti wrap bar that i ripped off at pismo and check all the fluids before the trip. it figures it started snowing up there yesterday. it should be gone by Friday. the fishing should be fantastic.

#377 ·
i got the jeep ready for the trip this weekend. i added some gussets to the wrap bar to help it stay this time. i know,i told you so. i also had to replace a front brake hose that the tire had rubbed almost through it. i first put saran wrap on the master cylinder and used a golf tee to plug the hard line. i then added a carb spring to stop any further rubbing

Looks like you went on some fun trips in your Jeep!

The pic of those fish made me drool a little bit

the fish were tasty, they dont get any fresher, cooked right after cleaning.

i picked up a set of headlight trims yesterday. i think ill paint them red later. chrome is kinda out nowadays. he had a light bar and tail lights as well. $10 for all! he had a sweet 88 or 89 in perfict condition.

tomorrow im off to deer valley with a group of jeepforum guy's. its another great trail. i would say its moderate in difficulty. there are a few water crossings that can be fun at the right time of year.

deer valley was fun. it got pretty cold at the end of the day. i think at one point we were at 8000 feet. we went thru the trail really quick this time. its a lot easier with fewer people.
