The newer the better, that's all I am trying to say, I have the 91' and the 92' is a little better (roll bar for one) and so on and so on. I never bought a JEEP to race anyone and most of the people I have talk to that have the 4 lagers or 4.2l do a engine swap to 4.0L I6 or a V6, V8 and they also do the rest of the driveline swap. If you can buy a 89’ for $7,000+- (That has a 12 year old drive train) or a 97’(with a 5 year old drive train) for $9,000 what would be the better deal? A new engine run's about $3,000. MY.02 Newer is better in this case. Sorry:p

Who knows what??????????? Jumping a jeep?????????That’s has a lot of knowledge behind it!!!! If you buy an older jeep’s and do not want to build it up from scratch than the newer the better. I am not say you 89 is a bad or better or anything just if the kid could buy something newer he should.

i have a 94 4 banger... very reliable but i would not agree with the milage thing, my milage has stayed the same since i got my jeep, and i run around 15-18 mpg... my buddy with a 4.0 gets this same milage, i would much rather have had a 4.0 i hate my 2.5 and i say that with compassion... because i love its reliability, if you can afford a 6 in any year get it-- you would be much happier, as year wise... i have heard the best year for YJ was the last year - 95 , but they are all awesome vehicles, just be cautious of the seller, they will often say just what you want to hear. Just get one that looks taken care of :) or you feel was... and get it checked as above... btw testament to the 4 banger... i now have 185000 miles on mine -- thats 297728.64 km for you canadian folks :p

lol, one day we will welcome the US and the UK into the metric world. in time if they are ready for this kind of knowlege. until them we have to protect them and learn them the right way's :D:D :D :D :D

a buddy of mine has a 4.0 and uses 2 to 3 LITERS more per 100KILOMETER

i dont agree on the newer the better. generaly it might be true, but there are other things to considder: mileage, offroad (ab)use, general state of exterior and interior.....

i think you just have to find one you fall in love with, like most of us did i think.

yah, i understand now.. you can always make an older jeep new... but i say if you have an older jeep and are thinking of a newer jeep keep the old and just fix it up... also he is using some funky form of money and mileage, so i say if you can get a new one for cheaper its a plus idea..

If I may put my $0.02 into this as well ..

OffRoadin'

I have a 1988 YJ running with a Chevy 350ci engine under the hood, 9.5 - 10" of lift, 38" tires .. and it was all done from the day I purchased it as a pure stock Jeep.

Now, if someone wanted to purchase my Jeep, they would have to be told that there are certain things that are particular to my vehicle, because it has been so customized, you cannot walk into Canadian Tire and just ask for "Jeep parts" to keep it running if/when it breaks down.

Best thing that I can suggest to you, without takin' the time required to drive across the country and checkin' the beastie over, is to have someone mechanical you trust to look over the vehicle you wish to buy. There might be a lot of work in that Jeep you are interested in. The price reflects that there might be alot of work in it .. but for someone who is 16, there might be too many problems for you to easily work around .. and the problems could get very expensive.

Best thing I can suggest is to find a nice, low KM Jeep (under 150,000km) for around $6000 (I paid $5000 for my 235,000km Jeep back in '99) .. but have it checked over (I can't stress that enough) by someone you trust mechanically.

The first question I would have to ask of you is "How much money do you have to spend on a vehicle" .. then you take that amount of money, split it in half.

Once you have half the money in hand, and the other half hiding in your cookie jar, I would start hunting. One really good thing to do, bein' in the Toronto area, see if you can find my friend Marty .. he has a spare little red YJ that he is selling, and a little white YJ (just like mine) that he is building into an awesome little trail-rig.

Take his stock little-red and then start very slow .. learn the vehicle before you start to modify it. When something breaks, you dig into that money from your cookie jar to upgrade it, instead of just fixing it. When all the money is gone from the cookie jar, you will have an awesome little trailrig.

If you visit his webpage, you will find his email address. Just let him know that NaeKid told you about his Jeep.

Here is a picture of "Rusty" .. his little Red Jeep and his Laredo that matchs mine :D

Now, as far as it still being available forsale, last time I talked to him he was planning it .. not sure how far the plans have gone, or if its still available.
