Yeah you right. there is always someone! Haah.

My gosh another crazy day. Between the jeep and work! (Comp, did you read about jeep/my day yesterday?! It topped this/today)

Oh no... what can I break this time.... I JUST did oil, and sparks have 8k on them.

#2,382 ·
I've got new sparks in my workshop, might as well do those tomorrow... I dont want to tempt fate but my Jeep has been running GREAT... its a little noisy when I'm holding high RPMs or downshifting or especially early in the morning for the first 30 seconds of driving its pretty... .well I guess "gurgly" is the best word for it lol.

#2,383 ·
Haha how old are the sparks?

If anything came out of today it was another learning experience AND throttle response! WOW What a difference when I get on it!

#2,387 ·
Ohhh ok. May want to check those out...

How does your 4.0 idle? Mine is still idling the same as it did before the TB and IAC. It still seems a little rough when in Drive...

Not sure what else to do!
Hmm... mine idles great, I think I even have a video out here somewhere lol! Cold it holds 1000rpmish for a little then settles down warm it will idle somewhere around 650 but very steady in drive its pretty good, a little vibration but barely even noticeable... still steady though. Have you done your fuel filter yet? When I did mine it went from diesel truck vibrating idle to holy crap this thing idles smooth!

Maybe its a tranny issue, not letting the torque converter slip as freely as it wants to?

Mine will do the same thing when cold and when warm it will run about 700 rpm. It seems to idle pretty smooth. Noticeable but not acceptable. When in drive it is much rougher.

I have done the fuel filter with in 8k miles too. I really hope that it isnt something trans related... But it is only crappy when in drive.

#2,384 ·
Been driving around. Noticed a slight decrease in gas mileage and idle smoothness seems to be unaffected.

#2,389 ·
I've cleaned my IAC and throttle body. I've got new O2 sensors. I have a new fuel filter/pump module as of last year. New plugs, cap, rotor, coil, etc. as of last year. It idles at around 400 normally. I've no idea why. I've done everything I can think of to improve things. It idles smoother in neutral or park than in drive. It could be more to do with engine mounts. I'm not sure. It is what it is though. I've never had a 4.0 that idled truly smoothly compared to modern engines. A 4.7 Jeep idles like butter in comparison.

#2,390 ·
Yeah it really just may be it is what it is. But what I am wondering is why it has gotten worse over the last year or so.

It is really frusturating. Because I sit in anyone else's car and it idles so much better then mine and I get mad

I do not know what to do. It runs, I can take that for what it is worth!

#2,391 ·
400... holy moly that must vibrate like hell. I have a buddy with the 4.7 and its amazing, I love that engine so much its one of the best things to come out of Mopar.... aside from the 5.7 Hemi... My buddy has that in his WK and I love that engine too

snobrdkid only cus I love you... no ****... actually its because I'm trying to burn through this tank of gas before the rents refill me tomorrow
cold start

warm idle and between reverse neutral and drive (not in that order lol)

Heh sounds like Jeep ownership to me. I seem to remember my old 4.0 ZJ doing a lot of vibrating, my sister is going to bring it back over on tuesday for me to change the oil for her but its been doing that and is damn near close to 200k miles and I let go of it at 120... so I think its survived.

Thank your for the post Comp. That is how mine starts, exactly when cold. My rpm's are a tad higher compared to the second video only because the AC is on. I really do not think it is anything to do with the idle anymore rather then trans...

Jerzey: I will see if I can get a video tomorrow. My idle looks pretty much identical to what comp posted. I will see if I can film water shaking or something. Not really sure what to film...
Water shaking huh, that sounds wrong... you know it may be idling fine but something isnt dampening the vibrations enough. Maybe you're in need of new motor mounts or a new tranny X-member mount. Hopefully its not something wrong with the torque converter I actually doubt that could be the problem.

Got some videos coming soon with the rpms @ cold start and the vibes. They are HD videos so hopefully it will be better. Ill link them to JF then just watch full screen.

I am thinking it may be motor mounts now. I need a bad/good motor mount comparison so when I get in there I know what im looking for....

#2,400 ·
Here are some videos and pictures. Ignore the extra second it takes to start. That was because I just turned it off right after I forgot to hit record. Usually fires right up w/o an issue.

Sorry about the music... crappy song on the radio. I did not record all the way to idle down. The picture shows where it settled to when in warmed up. Hope this helps

Will it hurt the tb to use carb cleaner on it if I've taken it off the engine? It just seems to me that garb and tb cleaner would be the same thing....essentially just.degreaser
I used Carb cleaner when i did mine. I Think carb cleaner are a little bit stronger than TB cleaner.

#2,403 ·
When I did mine I left the sensors on (minus the IAC) and was just really careful not to get the spray in/near them. I could even unbolt the one sensor it was so tight.

What do you all think of the video(s)?

#2,404 ·
Weird. Mine starts like that too but drops right back down to 600 and idles out. And that is a little more rough than usual. Mine shakes a little too...I think its just the motor mounts bc only the motor shakes when you watch it under the hood

That was a cold start. When it starts warm it will drop right down to normal idle.

Ill give them a check later today. Been busy running errands with mom this morning/afternoon

How much are motor mounts?

#2,406 ·
I think that water bottles got you paranoid lol! I just tried it and I get some ripples in the water bottle too but I dont feel like any vibrations at all so I think seeing the rippling water has you going crazy lol. That extra second to start is weird, if I cut mine and crank it over right after it starts faster not slower.

#2,408 ·
Comp: it usually doesn't do that, not worried. Well I can feel it a bit in the steering wheel as well. It actually has smoothed out some after driving around for about 50 miles since the new iac/throttle body.

MrJ: ill check it out!

#2,409 ·
Right, yes somebody should have mentioned that when you disconnect the battery the computer has to re-figure out its idle settings and the such so you'll get some crappy idle at first, oops! I forget, you did unplug the battery and reset after doin all this, riiiight?

I DID disconnect the neg battery cable. Have driven about 50 miles since and idle IS getting better. Faith is increasing in the throttle body cleaning! It is still noticeable but not enough to make whatever WAS rattling is now not rattling
