Can somebody point me to a thread on helping me remove my AX5 from my 92 yj. I am not sure if I have to remove the exhaust pipe or not. Also do I need to remove the starter...it has two torx bolts holding it on...doesn't seem like they connect to the tranny. Thanks

Vehicle Level Transmission and Drivetrain Manual Transmission/Transaxle Service and Repair Transmission Replacement

Transmission Replacement

REMOVAL

Remove shift lever knobs from transmission and transfer case shifter levers.
Remove transmission and transfer case shift lever boots.
On models with AX-5 transmission, press stub shaft retainer downward and rotate counterclockwise to release from lugs, then lift shift lever, stub shaft and retainer from transmission. Do not remove shift lever from stub shaft.
On models with BA 10/5 transmission, remove shift tower dust boot, then remove stub shaft retainer plate and lift stub shaft and shifter lever from transmission. On some units, a snap ring may be used in place of the retainer plate. Do not separate shift lever from stub shaft.
On all models, raise and support vehicle.
Drain lubricant from transmission and transfer case.
Place alignment marks on rear propeller shaft for reference during installation, then remove propeller shaft from vehicle.
Position a safety stand under transfer case for support, then remove rear crossmember.
Disconnect speedometer cable and back-up lamp switch from transmission.
Disconnect and tag vent and vacuum hoses from transmission and transfer case.
Disconnect range linkage from transfer case.
Place alignment marks on front propeller shaft for reference during installation, then remove propeller shaft.
Disconnect clutch master cylinder line from slave cylinder.
Position a suitable transmission jack under transmission and transfer case and secure with safety chains.
Remove clutch housing brace rod and clutch housing-to-engine attaching bolts, then lower transmission and transfer case from vehicle.
If necessary, remove bolts attaching transfer case to transmission and separate.
Remove clutch slave cylinder and throw-out bearing from transmission, then remove clutch housing.

INSTALLATION

Install clutch housing on transmission, torque attaching bolts to 27 ft. lbs.
Install clutch slave cylinder and throw-out bearing.
Position transmission on suitable transmission jack, then align transmission input shaft splines with spline on clutch plate. Install transmission and torque clutch housing to engine attaching bolts to 28 ft. lbs.
Connect clutch master cylinder line to slave cylinder.
Position transfer case on suitable transmission jack, then align transfer case and transmission shaft splines.
Install transfer case on transmission and torque attaching bolts to 26 ft. lbs.
Remove transmission jack from transfer case and position a safety stand under transfer case for support.
Connect vacuum hose, vent hoses, back-up light switch, speedometer cable and transfer case range linkage.
Install rear crossmember. Torque crossmember to frame attaching bolts to 30 ft. lbs. Torque rear support to transmission attaching bolts and nuts to 33 ft. lbs.
On models equipped with AX-5 transmission, install shift lever, stub shaft and retainer on transmission tower. Lock retainer by rotating clockwise until lug are fully engaged. When installing, ensure nylon insulator at end of stab shaft is properly seated in shifter block located inside transmission tower.
On models equipped with BA 10/5 transmission, position shift lever and stub shaft on transmission tower, then install retaining plate or snap ring, depending on unit.
On all models, install shift tower dust boot and shift lever boots and knobs.
Install front and rear propeller shafts, aligning marks made during removal. Torque U-clamp bolts to 170 inch lbs.
Fill transmission and transfer case with lubricant and lower vehicle.

Thanks....I have a book...sure looks like the exhaust is in the way....sure looks like the 4x4 handle needs removed...and I wonder about the starter. Anybody dealt with these items? I do not want to pull the tranny out, get stuck and have to remove any of these items.

Pulling a manual from a 6 cyl yesterday/today and the exhaust is in the way on that engine. Not understanding why they want you to mark the driveshafts for reference, unless you're only pulling the transfer case end and sliding them apart at the slider joint.

This is really a case of use your judgement. If it's in the way you need to pull it whether or not the book says to.

BTW if it's not already apart, run the engine til the manifolds are hot then touch the downpipe studs with a candle. As it cools and pulls the wax in your odds of removing instead of breaking are much better

good luck!

replaced my ax5 twice(don't ask) + an internal slave cylinder. never had to remove the starter. Definitely better to remove the exhaust. Don't forget the crank position sensor( i think that's what it's called). If you don't have a trans jack, but do have a soft top/ no top, and access to a hoist of any kind(and a safe place to hang it over your jeep), you can use the hoist to lift/ lower the trans and t case. Hope this helps

Ps, while it is out, check/ replace your trans mount(again, don't ask)and if you do pull the starter for any reason, those bolts are not torx(unless changed from stock) they only require a 12 point socket or wrench.

don't forget the crank sensor, I did! Once!
ripped the wires right out of it, good thing I had a parts jeep. And the reason i mention the trans mount is this, mine was weak, but I put it back in anyway. When it broke loose, it led to a broken motor mount, and an trans that was stuck in gear, hence the second trans change.

don't skimp like I did, the $25 that a new mount cost would have been cheap compared to a new trans

Thanks again brizee...I got the crank sensor. Do you know what the single bolt mount is called....it sits next to the tranny mount? Mine is bent up...thought I would replace that too. And how do you get the handle off the 4x4 shifter...I see the tabs but it is pretty tight.

for that extra bolt, i call it a torque mount( not sure of the real name) I added another rubber bushing (from a shock i think)and retightened. as for the transfer case shifter, I unbolted it from the t case , mount and all, 1 nut is shared with the t case mount
