Re-painting my TJ

This is a thread remake. For some reason ALL my photobucket pictures got messed up, so I figured it would be easier to make a new thread and condense everything.

Basically the back story is my dad bought the Jeep in 2001 (3 years old) and got it cheap because the first owner rolled it on the drivers side. Looking back on this we realized it was more than rolled on it's side, it was heavily abused. None-the-less it has been a rock solid Jeep. Zero frame or inside tub rust and the engine is bullet proof. But because of the crappy body work previously done, the outside suffered.

Anyway, the Jeep was passed down to me when I turned 16 and knew the first thing that I would do is new paint.

I'm a bit sad because it wasn't until AFTER I deleted all my pictures off photobucket, did I realize that there were some pictures on there that I didn't have on my computer, but I still have all the high points.

Before:

Bad rust spots:

Removed tailgate and began sanding/chipping the old filler off:

Finished sanding:

Still not quite sure what the deal with the rear quarter panel is. It seemed like the rust spots were right along where tack welds were behind the panel, and were where someone took a grinder to it, and did it really badly because they dug into the metal. You can also see on the back it rusted through to the that body mount box, but the other two bad rust spots didn't rust through.

So I decided to keep the body filler the the minimum. Instead of caking it on like the previous owner I went light, even if it meant the body wasn't perfectly flat. Here are pictures of the body filling:

Thanks guys!

Don't use Bondo. Use a quality brand. I used USC Duraglass which is a fiberglass filler and will hold up to body flex, then used USC Icing finishing putty. If you take anything down to metal use an epoxy primer on bare metal.

Also use a sealer over the any body filler if you don't use a primer. Simple body work and repaint can be done without having to use any high build/filler primer.

how much paint did that hood take to finish it? This summer we're repainting my dad's hood. also, what did you use for primer? I cheaply painted my doors (rattle can primer and duplicolor rattle can paint) and it didn't turn out so well. SO big repainting over the summer
The hood didn't take much at all. A quart of paint will go a long way. I'll be keeping an eye out for hood as well, something that's dent free. I used up all my paint and figured another quart will do the hood and any future mods like metalcloaks or armor.

I used PPG Omni line of paint. Bare metal I used their epoxy primer and for filler primer I used their 2k urethane surfacer.

Hah, I was surprised nobody else caught that.

Thanks guys!

This time I'm not getting dirt stains, would seem I might not have let the very first spray last summer dry enough before putting into use and it stained. It's holding up great, already been scratched a bit from the colorado pine trees. First wax will be when I put the doors on for the winter!

Hah, surprised to see this thread again, forgot about it! Paint is holding up great minus one little thing. First time I went offroading due to body flex some of the body filler cracked on the passenger side rocker panel. Fixed it with some monstaliner though. No other issues, still looks good with a coat of wax. I'll go take some fresh pictures, I actually don't have any recent pics since I got my new DSLR.

Thanks.

And I love the new album too. The lead singer is from Colorado so the local hard rock radio station promotes them fairly heavily, that's how I found out about them. Also saw them when they were touring with Disturbed and recently on their Share the Welt tour, they are great live.

Yeah I wish we had a decent station around where I live. There is 70,000 people here and they can't get a decent station. Unless your definition of decent is pop or rap. 5fdp is going to be playing at the local music festival the third friday of July. Just gotta find someone who wants to go with me.
