What to look for in a Wagoneer?

My current DD, a Chrysler minivan, is possibly down for the count and while searching around for a replacement I came across this Wagoneer: http://worcester.craigslist.org/ctd/2280717896.html

The space in the van is why I have it, I don't regularly need all the seating but I carry bicycles all over the place. I would be looking at this as a replacement for that and would almost certainly leave it stock, I have a Wrangler project already.

My main question is, although it says it's from the southwest and has really low miles for the age, what should I look for as far as regular problem areas if I do pursue this one?

rust can be a nightmare. also the small things can add up (windows, door seals, etc). but this one does look super good. check for oil/ fluid leaks. try out the transfer case offroad to make sure it works well. usually and upfront seller has nothing to hide so he should point out any issues BEFORE you find them later on. and depending on how far you drive- the mpg will suck. even if properly tuned and running well

I daily drive a 1991 Wagoneer. Its a good thing you have that YJ, or you would be very tempted to modify it! Im sure glad I have my XJ.

I paid 8 for my '91, it had very little rust (just the usual surface rust underneath). It had 127,000 miles, the original rare Hunter Green paint and a reman carb.

These things are going way up in value, just like 50's GM trucks. The early 70's wagoneers with the "cheese grater" grille and skinny wood paneling are by FAR my favorite! If its rust free and runs good, its a very good price!

Timely question!!

All: My husband and I are searching out a Wagoneer for daily (street) use...we're not into off-roading but ARE into Wags.

To add to the Q&A on this topic, your feedback to the following questions would really mean a lot:

1) Seems like these are very interchangeable, parts wise. I want the more comfy interior of say an '80 but HE (the wrench, who HATES computers on cars) wants an earlier one, say about a '74 +/-. Is it fair to say that the interiors and creature comforts found on later Wags are retrofittable without an act of Congress?

2) He wants to find one with a 6 cylinder but it seems like they're all v8-powered. True or not? If true, were there both inline 6 and v6 (depending on the YOM)?

3) We looked at a '79 this morning and I like the dashboard design. We also looked at about a '70 online and its dash was much more bare-bones. What model year did the dashboard change to the 1979's design?

Thanks in advance for your help and keep the shiny side up, everybody. :)
