I bought the Jeep in Sept 09 off of CL. The PO was in NW Arkansas about 60 miles away. Gave him a call and 2 hrs later I was Driving her home. Runs Great so far.
1993 Black YJ 4.0L I6 5-speed 169,000 mile, 31X10.50 tires, Long Shackles, Sagging springs, No Rust, to much chrome. I dont think he ever took her off the pavement, very clean inside and out, I dont think the top has been off more than a few times. Except for the paint. Lot of Mods to come.

2nd pic has the 1" Body lift on it. The orginal body mounts were worn-out.

Heres the 2nd of my patented ideas for the night. I had to remove the needle bearings as the new shaft doesn't take them. So I made me a press out of a 8.8 rotor, (2) 4x4s , (1) piece of oak 2x6, socket, and a C-clamp. Worked great.

Heres where I quit for the night. I spent an hour trying to get the silly clip on that holds the gears on the shaft. I got tired of fooling with it so i'm going to the 4x4 shop where I bought the SYE for help or advice.

Before I could finish the SYE I needed to change the seal on the Front output.

Front seal installed, installed the main shaft and the oil pick-up tube in the rear housing. It was very tricky getting the tube pushed up into the pump.

Last item of the night was to remove the shims on the springs. Hopefully 5Head is coming by after work tomorrow to help me set the 8.8 up on the springs.

I just finished my SYE and installing the transfer case. Before putting on the front drive shaft, I started up the Jeep and ran it in 2H, 4H, N and 4L and nothing flew apart so I guess I did it right. I submitted my measurement for my Tom Woods drive shaft and I hope to get it next week.

I think I am going to price having one built at Larry's Drive Shaft on 29th street in the Fort. What does the TW cost?

#762 ·
Bring one of your kids and have em play with Larrys shop cat while you negotiate.

I got mine done so cheap I almost felt bad.
Thats an idea. Is he open on Saturdays?

#765 ·
Not sure. Are there any advantages to the XJ other than maybe cost? What price would I have to buy the XJ shaft at to come out ahead with paying for the modifications?

#766 ·
I already had a shaft laying around, my memory is a bit fuzzy but as I recall I had Larry to shorten/rebalance it and got outta there for under $30. (thanks to a 4 year old talking about the cute kitty)

Cool thing is if the donor xj has a CAD chances are that front driveshaft wasn't in use for 99.9% of the miles that Cherokee was driven meaning the front DS may practically be new.

1st up tonight was to remove the last Skid plate bolt that I stripped out. I went by Home Depot and bought a $10 pipe wrench worked great, and now the T-Case drop is out. While I have it all apart I figured it was a good time to change the Tranny oil. Didn't need to, but I have been wanting to put 10w-30 in it to see if it helps with the shifting.

Filled up the T-case with fluid and torqued the front and rear yokes at 150 ft#s

Re-installed the skid plate and used anti-seize on the bolts. Maybe that will help with taking them out next time. With the recent trips to the Bottoms I have been fighting dirt. Every time I bang on something more falls out. I bet I have swept up enough to fill a #10 washtub. :) I cant stand laying in the dirt, so I find myself sweeping every 5 mins

My buddy from work (5Head) came by and helped me set the 8.8 on the springs.

I'm sure I'm not the first to do this, but I figured I might be able to make shock mounts from the stock 8.8 plates. I guess we'll see when it gets closer to that part.

I got the U-bolts and plates on and got it close to centered under the Jeep. This is about as far as I'm going tonight. This is the 3rd night this week I have come and worked on it and I'm gonna quit early tonight. I'm starting to crack out a little on it  and need a break.

Lookin good as always, haha I wish I had the patience to stop and take pics, Imagine if you ever sell that thing, you can print the thread and send it with the jeep! Should be worth an extra grand...hahaha, but then again You can probably never sell it, especially for what you have in it. I know how that goes!

I got a lot done today. The 8.8 is welded and in, shocks are on and brakes are started. Internet is down here at the house so I'm using my phone. Cox Comm is coming out on Monday evening so unless it starts working before then I will have pics monday night or tuesday

Interweb is back up.

I took a $140 gamble. Found a used DL for $90. Took it to Larry's Drive Line at 8am Saturday morning. He said the CV looked great and could work with it. $50 to shorten, (1) new U-Joint at the flange end and 2hrs later, I got started back to work on the 8.8 about 10:30am

Centered the 8.8 and set the pinion angle. 15* was 0* if you know what I mean. So I dropped the pinion down 2* to about 13* and tacked it. (Remember all this is done with $8 angle finders from Ace Hardware so I hope its close enough) I guess if I screw it up there is always shims.
