Checking Transmission Fluid???

Hello everybody, I'm new here and new to the Jeep family. We just bought a 2008 Jeep Commander two weeks ago for the wife. It has 23, 500 miles on it. Last weekend I service the Commander changing all of the fluids.
The transmission took 2 filters. The regular style trans filter that attaches to the valve body & a spin on filter. Both are located inside the transmission pan.
My questions is.....When checking the transmission fluid, the book says to have the Trans in park, the transmission Dip Stick says to idle in neutral.
Which is the correct way? Or does it really matter?
Also from doing some research I found that the trans should hold 5.5 quarts of AT+4. With the trans hot I've put 6.75 quarts and it's showing just below the bottom mark on hot...>>>>*HOT*.
Is there any input somebody can give me on this also.....Thanks
