I have a 2000 sahara. I swear that friggen light is on more than its off. I get all paranoid since the milage is so bad. How may gallons ae left once the light hits?
And is there any way to improve gas milage? Does a hardtop help?
I have a 2003 and the gas light seems to come on at about 14 gallons, that gives me about a "5" gallon reserve which would be about 70 miles but I haven't tested it yet.
That guage is so inaccurate I wouldn't trust it too much. On mine it can be at 1/8 tank. Then if I shut it off for a couple minutes and then start it again, it won't return to the same reading, it just sits barely above E.
according to my owners manual for a 98 tj the light comes on at around 3 gallons left in the tank which is about 45 miles or so,, i dont think anything changed in the 2 years that would make yours any different,, you can take off you lift- put on smaller wheels and coast down hill and try to get a tow from others as much as possible-- in a jeep that is about the best way to save on gas!! there are other ways like exhauset and air filters and a bunch of other things that you can search for in the forum and find out about
I fill up as soon as the light comes on and I've never put more than 14 gallons in to fill-up. Considering we have 19 gallon tanks, I'm assuming that I have another 4-5 gallons to go once the light goes on.....I've just never been brave enough to push it and see though.

I've only put in I think a max of like 17.5 gallons, that was with the light being on for about 60-80 miles in city though. When I fill up just after the light goes on I have about 6 gallons left.
Early TJ's came with a 19gallon tank but it was listed as a 15 gallon because a breather tube extends down in the tank, limiting how much gas you can fill up with before it shuts the pump off. I had seen a write up once about taking the tank out, removing the sender, and cutting off part of that breather. Cant seem to find it now though.

That's the link to the mod. Mine has about 4 gallons left when its already on the E and has been so for about 50 miles. Stupid thing. Anyone know how to calibrate them?
I know mine goes way before E before running out. It isn't even touching the bottom. I took a Jerry can around one time just to find out. I kept on filling up when I thought I was close to empty and only sticking 16 gal. in.
19 gallon 1997 ..... light goes on + 30 miles .... 4 gallons left
