Hi Guys,

I have 2003 Rubi - 29,000 miles on it. Is anyone using synthetic oil in their engine? What weight of oil are you using? I am in Southern CA - Hot Hot Hot so cold morning starts are not an issue here. I wheel in the desert - slow stuff and some city traffic.

My last OCI I ran a Fram filter that I got as part of an Advance promotion with Valvoline Oil. There is definitely a difference in the color of that oil after 3K miles as compared to after using a NAPA Gold filter. It looks like there is tons more carbon or some other black particulate in the used oil. When I drain the oil after using a NAPA Gold filter, there is reddish/brown look to the oil. I have no idea if this actually translates into more engine protection. I run the NAPA filter for the better anti-drainback valve for just a little more money.

If it's SAE rated (SL and SM are the current ratings) it will be fine/great for 99% of people. Switching from one to the other will not produce positive effects. Don't add any mystery oils, oil stabilizers, or other wizardry, you don't really know what it will do to the engineered addative packages that are in the oil.

In the OP's case he is not 99% of the poulation. So far his Jeep has seen about 3500 miles per year. If he uses a quality synthetic oil and changes it once a year (12 months), he will likely save money over doing 4 conventional oil changes (every 900 miles and 3 months) per year. The combustion byproducts that get suspended in the oil cause it to oxidize and break down, so even with so few miles driven, dino oil would need to be changed too often to save him money.

Very interesting. I ran lucas in my truck one oil change a while back and noticed quickly that the oil pressure went up about 10psi....not that I needed it to. Note, I don't run it anymore in any of my vehicles. I use castrol and castrol high mileage in my truck that has 120,000 miles on it. To be honest I have always used castrol mainly because I remember, as a kid, my dad always bought it. It has served me well over the years.

Pennzoil yellow bottle 10-30 in everything, I change oil every 5-7k with a new oil filter. Bean doing this for many many years and never had a oil related problem.

Been running conventional Valvoline in everything for 30 years (starting with lawnmowers in my grandfather's engine shop when I was 6). Never had an issue or a reason to change.

    It's the internet for ya!

Bottom line is I don't like the test he ran in the previous link. It was not done with few enough variables. An oil that aerated before Lucas is still going to aerate with Lucas, and it aerated more because he turned up the speed.

I could go into a long debate with someone, but it's not going to accomplish anything here.

Oh, too add to the whole Lucas thing. My experience, and opinion. I just replaced my RMS and was able to see the underside of my engine and everything was perfect. There was also no sludge or anything in the pan, it was clean. My Dad of 30+ years of being a mechanic agrees. I can't say the Lucas kept it this way, but it certainly didn't hurt.

10w 30 pennzoil here and a napa gold or wix filter. I also heard that wix makes napa's filters.

I think a good quality filter is more important then the oil if choosing form the name brand dino oil.

One time I pulled the drain plug and took old filter off. While oil was drianing I went to get new filter ready. Opened 1qt of oil to lube the seal. Opened box and removed filter and was shocked to find orange paint flecks inside of filter:eek::eek::eek:WTF:confused::confused::confused: I couldn't believe it. The worst part was I had no way of getting to the store to take it back. Had to wait till my wife got home from work.

Needless to say that was the last fram filter I ever bought. And when I buy filters I check them before I leave the store.

I also noticed a change in the color and odor of the oil with a better filter.

Update: I no longer run Mobile 1 10w30 and will be switching to a 10w30 with ACEA A3 ratings after reading "My oil is killing my engine!" thread.

just gonna say i hate absolutely hate sythetic and pretty much anything thats not produced by valvaline. i use valvaline in my bike and my jeep.

i use straight 30 weight in the bike nearly year round had it 5 years and the bike has ~60k miles on it without a rebuild (yes in dear need of a rebuild but i refuse can still do 140mph)

the jeep i use 10w30 in the winter for the colder mornings and 10w40 during the summer for the more intense heat ive not had any problems.

quakers state is a no go and so is synthetic in my book ive seen dirty *** heads from both, but thats not to say valvaline doesnt have its probs too, ive just not found them.

BOOOOOO to no poll, but I use 10-30 dino, 76k on my jeep and the engine is running strong with regular pil changes and norm dino oil. I run the jeep in the bitter cold northeast, as well as hot hunid summers and conventional oil has not wronged me.
