Is there any one in the Auburn area that rides, wrenches, or meets?

Goldville is God's country. I use to frequently visit a store over there to play pool. I think it was a store/liquior store/ tire shop. Also just down the road from there is some of the best catfish you can eat at Red's Catfish.
Small world isn't it?

When I was attening Au (war eagle) we used to have some awesome wheeling at a place called planet X. Even went through a tunnel under the interstate. I had an 80 yota back then. I have an isuzu trooper with some 32 mud dawgs, where do you want to go?

I'm from Dothan, AL. About 2 hrs south of Auburn, but I'd be more than willing to make the trip.

I'd love to check out Planet X. Never heard of it. Anyone ever go to "Drunk Creek" outside of Auburn? Went there once w/ a friend about 10 years ago, back when all I drove was Mustangs. :D IIRC though, the road to get back there a lot of fun. I'll have to see if he can tell me how to get there.

Im in Auburn

Auburn really has no places to wheel...

Planet-x, or whats left of it, is now called east samford. They extended the road to meet up with Glen. Im not sure if the trails out there are any good anymore either, but when I get my Honda Trail 90 again Ill check it out and let you know.

Drunk creek is impassible now too. There are trespassing signs and piles of rubble blocking the trail. You can still swim back there at the waterfall, but you cant drive back there at all and dont get caught littering either, thats what the landowner said.

We just bought a new 09 4 dr. Sahara to use as a tow car behind the motor home, but like to get off road now and then too. We've only had it since mid July and I've been working on it a little to get it ready to tow, but we've taken it up to the Talledega Nat'l Forest a couple of times and driven what is called on the maps "Skyline Drive" or FS 600-1. It was interesting what with being in a brand new stock Jeep. It's mostly an old logging road that hasn't been maintained in a looong time. Several portions are pretty washed out, especially on slopes, but some of the flatter portions are good. It took us about 2 hours to drive 5 miles or so, but we stopped a couple of times to admire the view and have a snack. That was on the southern part of the drive, south west of Hwy 77.

Take County road 7 north out of Goodwater to Hwy 148. Turn left on 148 and go about a half mile and Skyline drive will be on your right. You can see remnants of rutted asphalt on the slope. If you go just a hundred feet or so farther, you will turn onto a good gravel road. That isn't the one you want, though it is a nice drive.

You will come out on Hwy 77 just north of County road 209, or Horns Lake road. If you want to do the rest of Skyline, take Horns Lake road east to Chandler Springs road, then find where Skyline Drive turns off to the right about a mile up the road, just after you cross a bridge over Talledega Creek. You will eventually come out on the Talledega Scenic Hwy and you can go where you will from there. We worked our way back to Ashville on mostly dirt roads then got on 77 to come back to Opelika. There are a lot of FS roads up there, most of them in MUCH better shape than Skyline Drive. It did give me a chance to try out low range though, mostly for speed control. It's not super challenging given that I got through there without any scratches or dings but you will need the ground clearance of the Jeep and if you don't use low range you're either going to wear out the brakes or get thrown out of the seat. Some deep gullies to cross in there.

This road was in my GPS (Garmin), btw.

If you find any good rides suitable for a stock Wrangler, let me know!

I believe the roads that "jbstok" mentioned above can come out around the top of Cheaha State Park. I have started at Cheaha State Park and came out at the top of the mountain on HWY148 as mentioned above, but it has been a few years since I have been up there. If someone wants to get a ride together up there, I may be willing to follow someone in my TJ. If I remember correctly, it would take a few hours to ride the whole distance, but it was worth it. Many great views, And Cheaha State Park has a hotel, and resturant, or camp sites for anyone that is interested in staying up there.

I just stumbled across this thread searching for some trails in Auburn. I used to know a short little section of trail in Tuskeegee but it got blocked off. I'm definitely down to go wheel some if anyone needs a partner. I might have to give FS600 a shot on Labor Day. Send me an email, or holler at me if you see me. I drive a 2nd gen Isuzu Trooper with 33s, probably the only one in town with big tires.

for real guys, im at auburn now too... and i just want to go ride around off road a bit... anywhere is fine with me. I have been through most of the tuskegee NF main roads, and a few of the "trails" that were wide enough to fit down. I am down for anything in the auburn area though... if ya'll know of some good spots share it!

btw, 79CJchik, i think i saw that jeep on your profile today parked in auburn... i always notice a CJ when i see one!

Drunk Creek is out in Loachapoka. You can get to it a couple different ways i think. I got a buddy to give me directions to a spot he took me to once:

"1. get on Hwy 14 (MLK Drive) going S/W
2. turn right onto Waverly Rd. (first right past the post office)
3. turn left onto Co Rd 65 and continue until you hit the bridge
* instead of turning at CR65, you can turn left onto CR64 and it will be a lot quicker but the last time I did this it was blocked off. not sure if it still is though so it may be worth a shot. "
Those were his directions and i'm pretty sure its drunk creek, regardless is a really nice drive out their, really pretty.

I have no idea which way we went becuase it was several years ago, but the road we took was pretty challenging and 4wd was required... and it was dry, no mud. My buddy that took me was driving a GMC Sierra extra-cab though so I'm sure a Jeep would be a little easier. If it's open I will definitely be going back there to give that road a try myself.

We turned off of college street to the right (if youre heading towards tuskegee) right before a church. We just went down a bunch of roads wide enough for my CJ to fit and when we came to a dead end just turned around. We crossed over 85 and came out on Wire Rd to go home. I was just followin directions cause it was my first time in there.

I dont believe i've been off 915, how is it?

The trail off 915 was very fun and a little challenging. I would not suggest street tires...... I would suggest a winch or trail partner. I was a little foolish to attempt without help now that I look back on it.

I think the Auburn Jeepers need to have a eat and greet or something along that line pretty soon.
