i'm going to have to replace my 258 soon on my 83 cj. i wanted to go to a 304, but just realized i have an sr-4 tranny. thought it was a t-176 (imagine my disapointment !)
anyway, from what i understand, the sr-4 is'nt strong enough to push a 304. is that correct, or can i get it to work?
Not a good idea. The SR-4 is barely adequate for the 4-banger it was intended for. They did make it to the 258s, also, unfortunately, as you found out. Some seem to last, but most, if abused, self-destruct.
On a 304? You'd likely be pulling it out again sooner than later. Best bet is to replace it now with the motor, to save you some labor and future down-time.
The origional owner of my jeep said that he had the SR4 fixed under warranty, and then it died again at about 30K so he replace it with the stronger T4. It has a 258. The T4 is still going (quickly dying) with over 200K now but I did snap the mount off the case.
yeah, nevermind, i picked up another 258. now i'm looking for a t-18a w/ granny 1st.
thanks for all of the info though.
