Ok like the title indicates it is a Dana 44 out of a 1996 isuzu rodeo.

I want to know all that you all know about this axle.

in/outs pro's cons etc. etc. as it sits according to the tag 4.10 R&P disc, 6x5.5 BP (same as I have on the YJ now)

I would like to take the locker out of the front of my jeep and install it in the isuzu 44, but I am not sure if this is possible or not.

I have a detroit electrac in the front now going to go run it for the first time on the Snakes in about 6-8 hours.

however with the current setup of my front axle in the SOA position it lives my front actuator in what i would consider a less than ideal location, and I feel it would be much safer out back.

I was thinking that I would run a lunch box style locker in the front or an e-locker.

but at this time my main concern is being able to swap the front locker to the rear, I picked this axle up for $90 and all it needs is a new rotor since someone pulled it off all ready, I will of course need to set it up with 4.56's and the front locker if at all possible that is.

its a true 44 i know that .bit i also know its considered a metric 44 .now as to what that means i'm not sure.it could mean the bolt pattern is metric but as you say its 6 on 5.5 which counts that out.it could be the axle shaft diameter is metric.or it could mean the carrier is metric.

i can find out monday witha call to somebody i know that just recently put a locker in an Isuzu 44.Monday you could also call someplace like randy Ring & Pinion and just ask them if its the same .they should tell you whats up on the carrier swap.

ok so far after a quick search i have found the shaft size is larger then a standard 44 till they neck down at the carrier.

it uses a different and larger pinion bearing.

it also uses a different carrier offset.meaning the carrier in a normal 44 that would break at 3.73 would hold a thicker geared 4.10 for the Isuzu so that might put your idea right in the dumpster

well i bought a couple D44 out of rodeo's for my axle swap project on my XJ, one had a spun pinion bearing

and i believe one of them is a 4.10, yeah the gears are thicker, and from what every body at randy's told me , the carrier is different also, but i was totally regearing to 5.13 on mine, so i got all new standard d44 carrier, and gears, all went in just fine, but randy's does sell a Rodeo 44 master install kit, just fyi

i have the gears out of the axle, they are some 4.10s, not sure if it was LSD or not, but if your going to put locker in, guess it doesn't matter any how, the rodeo's came with 4.10 or 4.?? for that model year, great thing bout these axles, plenty of them out there due to rodeo's and passports, and they sell super cheap, compared to 8.8 with discs out of an Xplorer

good luck

How does the Rodeo disc to disc dimension compare to the drum to drum on a YJ? Anybody know how easy the Isuzu housing will go into the YJ?
I replied to your email message and just a quick FYI people refer to it as WMS to WMS (W-heel M-ount S-urface) just to help you out when asking, this type of question.

WB - Thanks for the support, I had heard some of these things as well, I just wanted to see what everyone had to say here, I may just have to do some more research.

6 states, said that my front waggy 44 detroit electrac would swap right on over, I am just looking for re-assurance before i commit to this path of on the change over.

Hey OT: I hit the snakes today after about a year since I last did it with the Jeep set up 2" SUA on 31's, posted photo's on RME trip reports.

Thanks for the help, good to hear from some one that has actually messed with this particular axle so far.

I actually picked this up all ready over a week ago for $90 minus one rotor and new brakes, and the calipers look near new as well, I happened across it in a U pull it JY.

I am just doing a little research before I dig into this diff and find out some crazy thing that will kill the project.

quick question, are you still using your D30 or did you happen upon another axle for the front as well? if new front axle which one?

Isuzu D44 should be 6 x 5.5 are you planing on changing the bolt pattern or running spacer/adapters?
