i know its been covered on here a thousand times, i am selling my nice 12 inch with 1200 watt amp on saturday(just to bulky in the back) i love the bass for all music. and am thinking of doing a cubby hole subwoofer,

first question, i dont have a jigsaw or bow saw to cut the mdf board, what did you guys use?

second, how much space is really back there? i was also thinking of fitting something like the size of a sony 10 inch truck box after i cut the plastic and just let it hang out in there for a while(they are dirt cheap on ebay)

third, has anyone used one of those powered subwoofers that are about 10 inches x 14 inches? are they any good, im not trying to build a comp system again just trying to find a nice median. what i was thinking with this kind was screwing it to the back of the seat or the lift gate, but havent found anyone that has dont it on an xj just the tj's and there doors dont open up like ours.

forth, i know the bass from shallow mount subs arent as good as from a normal sub, but how do they sound in a suv?

i know there is something i am forgetting but it is 1am here, also forgive me if i posted this in the wrong section i had question about the xj specifically and didnt want just any answers from a tj or yj owner

thank you in advance

I bought a BOSS 1200 watt powered subwoofer about 4 years ago to fit under the back seat of my dodge Ram. Loved it! I moved it to my 95 jeep cherokee a couple of months ago. I ran the cables under the carpet and behind the trim to the back cargo area and screwed it to the side of the cargo area on the passenger side over that cubby hole back there. It vibrated the trim and around the windows and the lift gate so I had to move it. Ended up screwing it to the back of the back seat. Gives me lots of bass but doesn't bother the neighbors. I have been thinking about getting the 1500 watt one for my truck.

Ran the power wire up the passenger side trim, thru the fire wall and connected the fuse and then to the battery. Grounded it to the body back by the rear seat belt. Ran the remote wire to the radio up the drivers side along with the cable for the little base controller (this controller gives you the ability to adjust the bass and I put it up by the center console where most people have their 4 wheel drive lever). Ran the the two subwoofer cables up the center under the center console to the back of the radio. You don't want to run the sound/signal cables near the power wire. Easy install, maybe a few hours.

ok see i looked at the boss 1200's and i read some bad reviews, maybe it was just a bad batch of speakers?

i also had to rewire the entire xj (havent done the passenger door yet) and while doing this i thought of maybe putting a 8 or 10 inch under the seat and just letting it be free air for a time being.

im only get 200 for my subs and amp with a box and sadly im going to get to watch them get destroyed by my brother in law, i dont really want to sell them but the wife doesnt like them

sorry for got to add by letting the free air in under the seat i would add carpet that i have laying around to set it on so it did sound like complete crap

for go to add i was looking at this pyle bass tube(much cheaper than a bazooka tube) how do they sound in the xj's? i know pyle isnt the best brand but they are getting better

I saw the poor reviews also but there were some good ones also. The only reason I bought the Boss instead of a tube was because it was initially going under a back seat in my truck. What ever you get, you only get what you pay for and I think my speaker was worth the 120 that I paid for it.

have you checked this out? great product and isnt that expencive. he sells them loaded also. you said something about space. you lose practically no cargo area. i see them pop up in the ads over there also. might wanna see about a used one. also if you dont have a table saw i woulndt make a box. they need to have really tight joints nd you cant do that with a jig

you really cant go wrong with the guys box. its pretty awsome. yes pricy but with all the intriquate angles he puts in to it to grab every square inch is quite the process. im a carpenter and im the same way with my friends. built plenty of sub boxes and even did the rear seat of my 05 tj. my proudest was a 15 in square sub into the back of my buddies rsx. 8000 watts. sat flush with the rear window and top of the seats. the top half i could climb into its self. the bottom half i did out of marine grade fiberglass to go down in the spare tire. this was ten years ago but i think i have a picture somewhere.

that sounds like a lot of fiber glass ha, i was/am temped to just buy one of those 10 inch kickers in a truck box just to have the lows filled in and before jeep fest next year put it in the cubby hole, my question about the cubby hole mod is this why not fill it with some of that cotton filler for sub boxes, sorry i forgot the name. and just use a silicone base cocking on the edges let it dry and see if it rattles, if it does add more

There not really using the cubby hole. You pull the panel out. Cut it all out and the box sets inside the hole you cut. And is mounted to some metal behind the panel. I have just a plain 10in box a buddy gave me. Its fairly small and sounds great. He prolly got it off the shelf at best buy for 30 bucks. Its slanted and fits the contour of the back seat.

What about a spare tire sub ? Anyone used one ?
It would be nice and hidden under the cover but would have to come up with a different way to hold the spare in place .

I have some subs but they collect dust cause Ive out grown that stuff. .
I have one installed, check out my Build Thread on page 5. I have all collected all of the Factory Accessories in mine haha!

I believe the spare is still mounted the same on those spare tire subs.

I have one of DoubleTapXJ's boxes, and I love it. I've got a Type R 10" in it running at 900W and it slams. Might upgrade the sub since it doesn't offer the SQ I want, but the volume is superb. Also, he's willing to do things a bit custom. I know he makes 12" ones if you ask, and he made my box a bit deeper as per my request.
