This thread is to serve as an inspiration to others modifying their ZJ's. Pretty simple, just post what you did to your ZJ today!

Today I shamefully took my Jeep to get the oil changed because it was to hot to change it myself.

Sooo anybody no where i can get a good aftermarket dipstick/tube set up for my 318? I can find a grip of older ones that enter through the timing cover buuut..... I'm sure I could get one for a dodge, but I'm not sure of the the length do to the different oil pans....

OT: went to the dealer to order said part and was informed there were a #*&%load on back order but no confirmed vendor! But they had the oil filter fitting!!

And now I'm waiting patiently for my valve covers to show up.....should be by the end of the day!

I try to avoid it. I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for"

So you think because you got a part at an auto store it's better than something from the yard? hahaha

At the JY you are going to get a genuine Mopar part as to where if you go someplace else it's probably going to be cheap chinese crap. Just because it has been used on a vehicle doesn't mean it's junk. There are plenty of useful OEM parts at a junkyard that are better than auto store parts. I got all 8 of my injectors there, front drive shaft, window motors, trim pieces, relays ect. all in great shape.

Plus, we are only talking about a dipstick tube here geez

Everything here X10000

Junkyard parts are almost always better than the new crap you pay 10x the price for at a parts store.

Bought a new kia optima sxl and they gave me $2000 for my 98 zj. Didn't even trade it in, it's just a credit because its a competing vehicle I guess. Works for me.

Yes, but you are only going to get the OEM dipstick at the junkyard, unless you are really lucky. Same with the dealership. You should go to the partshouse and have them special order a high-flow, synthetic dipstick with a urethane seal. The design is slightly different and doesn't inhibit oil flow as much as the stock one does. It is made from a special Teflon blend, so contaminants don't stick to it, thereby ensuring that less crap stays inside your engine during an oil change. The urethane seal lasts longer than cheap aftermarket rubber ones (stock one doesn't even have a seal), and keeps contaminants from falling into the dipstick hole when driving or when checking the oil level.

I think they run about $100 at O'reilly.

I don't news a sermon on parts, I'm not an idiot. Do to the fact that I had corrosion problems with the one I had, (and was gonna reuse) I can only assume that I will contiue to deal with it in a Ju part. I'm eliminating problems with this build of mine, not swapping them. Same reason I ordered valve covers. Mine seal up perfect but I don't want 15 yrs of build up from them ending up in my new motor. It's a judgement call and a preferance.........don't hate, jus ask if you don't understand.

Oooohhhh thats weird how'd it get like that?
Idk. It was like that when I got THAT motor put in. It was a cheap as hell salvage. This will the fourth motor my zj has seen. Original one, heads went. After that I replaced it, that one was bad right away so the shop got me another and swapped it free of charge. Then I had my lil snapped timing chain and gear issue so I bought this motor and wanna do it right.

call it "project white glove build''
I would but not very much is white.....actually my hands stay black between the grinding, sanding and cleaning of all the other parts getting reused......then when I'm done they get PAINTED black! We'll call it black glove!! :)

I just cleaned my valve covers spotless inside and out when I changed the gaskets. Seem to still be working. Maybe there is a company that makes unobtanium dipsticks.

Oreilly's has dipstick and tube for 24 bucks.

No they don't but I have heard stories about fitment issues with them. Mainly from getting two of the same sides. One not notched for the AC.
Well the seal will have to remain to be seen, but they ARE mopar, not "some Chinese crap" after all. And they are cast aluminum not stamped steel, and they are for sure not 2 of the same side, the oil caps are on different sides, one by the j the other by the p! Oh and neither of them (old or new) have a notch for Ac. I don't see the need for one. Maybe post a pic of what you mean.
