I'm wanting to install power brakes on my 77 cj7 but I am not sure what all I'd need to buy and change to install it. Would i be able to just buy the brake booster at a parts store and just install that with my stock line an master cylinder or would I have to change all that too? I'm also thinking about swapping my front drums to discs from a jeep of the same year. Would I be able to just go to a parts store and buy calipers and discs and install that? I'm really confused and need help so any little bit would be greatly appreciated!
I also have a 77 CJ, but mine's a 5. So far the best manual to power brake conversion I have seen and will be doing in the next few weeks uses a yj master cylinder and booster in place of the CJ master. Apparantly the best year for a donor is 95 for some upgrade reason. Luckily there is a good one in town for me, the guy wants $100 for the full assembly, but i think I can get $80. The only modding necessary to make it fit is you have either lengthen or shorten the booster input linkage a bit.
Use the search bar at the top of the site, that's how I found out about all this. good luck!
To go with power brakes you may also need a new proportion valve to re-adjust the flow to the brakes. Depending on your donor parts, they may require new lines to/from the valve to cylinder.
In short you need to replace everything from the nuckles out to make it work.
There is alot of info on the forum about this specific topic. If you are having a hard time finding it through the forum search, try using google and included jeepforum (one word) in the search
Thanks for the help! At least you were able to get me going in the right direction! But if I go to a parts store and get the booster and master cylinder for a 77 with power brakes would it just bolt up?
There is a bracket between the M/C and the firewall. Your old m/c just bolts right to the firewall. I used a 89 xj booster and m/c but I had to make a braket and a new rod. I dont know anything about the disc brake swap.
i have a booster and mc that I just took out of mine when i put in hydroboost brakes, they worked great until i threw some 37's on it lol
if you are interested ill sell it to ya cheap.
if not then i cant say enough with VANCO brakes, they are absolutely amazing.
