Studded Tires

I just purchased a 2009 Patriot. I live near the top of a mountain, three and a half miles of steep grades and several switchbacks. Our HOA suggests studded tires and/or chains for the winter. The owner manual says chains shouldn't be used. Anyone have experience with studded tires, good or bad.

I've used neither but I've heard some have used chains. I believe the reason they aren't recommended is because they may hit or catch on the fender well, brake lines and suspension components. Check the fit very carefully.

I used Studded tires on my Cavalier and Grand Am in Spokane, WA for years. Hilly snowy terrain there. They work great, but aren't legal in all states. They are hard on the roads I guess. They do work though. I kept mine on a separate cheap set of rims.
