Did Jeepster have the same problem with the gap and the basket halves? (didn't realize the basket was in 2 pieces) and Jeepster looks like he just cranked his brackets on tighter (looking at the 'gap' he was talking about)

I'll have to get a hold of my buddy in parts and see what he can find out for me about that (Mopar probably just isn't aware of the problem and will come up with a 'pipe extension' part add-on for MK owners)

Jeepster says that he maybe off about 1 1/2" on his, they are MOPAR but not made for the Compass. I plan on redoing mine after my trip and making an 8" steel extension with the bent rods for the basket too so it looks like th factory.

Bob - you are quite the industrious one

I don't think I'd ever actually use the roof basket to make it worth the cost and the fabrication needed to make it work

that and most of my money gets sunk in to my other hobby - digital photography

The wife and I like to go on "treasure" hunts. I needed this for the vacation coming up so that we have enough room to haul stuff back from the Worlds Longest Yard Sale next month. We'll also be picking up some factory leather bucket seats for the wife's Grand that a friend has been storing for us. They will fit in the back OK but what about the other "treasures"? There is method to my madness.

AH yeah I can see that

I just have me...no wife, no treasures etc so if I go somewhere and can't fit everything I need in the back then I'm taking too much stuff! HAHAHA

Jeep Compass -- Ideal positioning for roof cross bars?

I know it was discussed here some time ago but I can not find the thread.

What are the ideal positions for the factory cross bars on the Compass? I realize we can probably use whatever positions we want but I thought there was a combination that would reduce drag and wind noise.

Does anyone know?

Thanks!

On a related note... I seemed to have lost the Allen wrench that came with the cross bars. I just assumed it was a standard size and haven't really thought about it since I only use the cross bars 2 or 3 times a year.

But the allan bolt that attaches the cross bars to the vehicle appears to have some kind of center pin that prevents using a standard Allen wrench set on it.

Does anyone know how I could go about getting a replacement?

Thanks

Those are a 4mm tamperproff Hex Wrench (Allen). You may be able to find then locally. Here is an example from eBay to what you are looking for:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Bondh...19193004r18908

Thanks! I had no luck finding it locally, so it looks like I'll get it online.

You may want to search. I just posted the link to the first good example that I found. I don't know if there are better deals out there.

Back on post #72 shows mine that are half custom built because the basket hold downs aren't spaced right for the sport bars. I don't know of any full custom built set-ups.
Check eBay for the sport bars. You could get lucky.

I love your compass. what is the lift and where did you get it. also, running bigger tires...will they rub on the inside of the wheel wells? I had this problem when i first lifted my old wrangler but used wheel spacers as the remedy.

This is the only mass produced kit available. Look under the Patriot/MK listings, they are all the same. 2 1/4" lift. Offroad products for the serious offroad enthusiast!

See my profile for more info but I have 235/60-18" and no rubbing. I think originally they were 29.2", about 35K ago. Some people have gone taller tires, some with spacers. I prefer to keep them from 28 1/2 - 29 so that I don't lose bottom end and I don't have to fuss with other problems.

Thanks for the kind words, I like it too.
