Serpentine belt or alternator?

I've been hearing a squeal at start up for a week or so, then I noticed that it did it again when taking off from a stop. Two days ago I could kind of feel the Compass "stutter" while driving and my headlights would dim for a second. Tonight the squealing was a lot more frequent and my battery light came on while I was driving. So, I wanted to get y'alls opinion on whether you think my belt might be slipping or my alternator is going out?

Change your belt, 20 bucks and half an hour of time. See if it changes. Your belt is 5+ years old, probably needs to be changed.

If it's the original belt, changing it couldn't hurt, and while doing that you'll know if the tension (idler pulley) is working correctly. If the squealing continues or the battery light comes on after that I'd have the alternator tested at a local parts store.
