Replacing Lower Ball Joints on 2009 Patriot
 
So I havenít been too active due to looking for a house and planning my wedding but my fiancťs 09 Patriot has a knocking noise which I knew would either be the Tie rod on the driverís side or Ball joint. We took it to the dealer for a routine oil change and were told we needed new lower control arms and an alignment so that answered my question. Now Iíve been reading about 8 older threads and apparently I can press out the balljoints which is great. I didnt think they could since my 08 Liberty they cannot. My question is, has the suspension changed on the 09 Patriots or can I still press out the lower balljoint and slap in a greasable Moog? Also if so, Iíve looked on the Moog site and when choosing Compass and model year 09 nothing comes up but choosing Compass and year 08 I get model number MOOG-K500063. Is this the correct one that others have used? Thanks in advance.

I can tell you that you can press in/out the LBJ's on your KK,for the patriot it does look like you can replace teh LBJ's themselfs and not the whole LCA.

You can replace just the ball joint but honestly it is a pain. It is much easier to just replace the whole lower control arm with the new ball joint and bushings already installed. You can find the whole assembly on Ebay for like $50.00 up to $100.00+. It is not that hard if you have all the right tools. The parts from 07-10 and maybe beyond are all the same. They probably don't list the newer years because in all reality they shouldn't fail so quickly! Thanks.

I'm not sure how I missed this except for whatever reason it didn't show up as being highlighted (new thread). These are all the same. I don't have access to the later parts books so you can double check with the dealers if you like. Yes the whole assembly is easy to install but you also get the factory, no grease fitting and smaller 'joint' in the process. If you have ever replace the earlier type of ball joints it's just the matter of having a press to R&R the Moog type.

Side note: 'lookers' may not have been members, couldn't post but were still counted.

Did you do the job yet?

If you haven't already, I can fully recommend that you seek out a "pro" with a hydraulic press to do the pressing for you. If you have a typical hand press and just have to do it yourself, like I did, clamp the control arm in a SOLID vise. Press them out that way. Had to mention that in case you were going to try with your knee.

*Be careful with the old bushings when taking out the control arms. The arm needs to be manipulated just right to come out without jacking up the bushing.
*If you remove the steering knuckle, you could do the whole job on the vehicle, but with all that torque it's dangerous on jack stands. Lift? Sure. Bring your muscles and have a cold beer handy.
*With the new ball joint, grease the control arm opening and the ball joint body. Watch out and don't press too far. As soon as you can see the far side of the retainer groove come through, stop pressing.
*Use a section of 1.5" PVC pipe to dead-blow hammer the boot on. By hand, that F'in thing will make you see the sun go down. The PVC should fit snugly over the boot. Make sure the PVC is smooth around lip so as not to tear up the boot. A little grease will help. My hat tips to anyone who can thumb those on. Video or it didnít happen.
*Don't over-tighten the grease fittings. Couple turns then orient it in the direction which suits you best.
*Top off the fittings with grease, if you like.

In all honesty, I didn't enjoy pressing them out or in one bit. Someone else may disagree and say it was a piece of cake, but my control arms did NOT like the process.

The ball joints are AWESOME and the overall job was easy, but again, I should have had a shop do the pressing for me. It wasn't fun or worth the savings IMO.
