I guess it would be best if I contribute to this site a little more.

Here is a how to on removing the front bumper cover. (Gramps, feel free to move this to a how-to thread if youd like.)

1st youll need these tools to remove the bumper cover.
7mm socket and ratchet
7mm wrench
10mm socket
screw driver or panel removal tool (for push rivets)
Step 1 remove the 3 7mm screws on the wheel shroud in front of the front tire.

Step 2 remove the push rivet on the inside of the wheel well. (top one on pic)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...moved/0br2.jpg
step 3 remove the 2 push rivets on the bottom of the shroud that attach to the bumper cover.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...moved/0br3.jpg

step 4 pull the shroud back to expose the inside of the bumber cover.

Step 5 remove the 7mm bolt in the corner of the bumper cover connecting it to the fender. also remove the 2 larger push rivets you see in the same area. (second push rivet is behind metal piece to the right in picture)

this is what the larger push rivets look like.

repeat steps 1-5 on the other side.

step 6 romove the air intake upper piece by twisting the two plastic hand screws and remove.

step 7 remove the 2 10mm bolts on the corners of the bumper cover were it meets the fenders under the hood(already removed in picture 1). and also remove the 5 plastic push rivets.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...oved/0br11.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...oved/0br12.jpg
step 8 underneith there is a clip that holds the bumper cover to the chasis. there should be 2 (mine only had one, yeah those cheap.... )
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...oved/0br13.jpg
step 9 pull upward on the top part of the bumper cover near the headlight with one hand and pull outward on the corner below the fender at the same time with the other. the bumper will slide forward. only pull it out a few inches at first and then twist the turn signal sockets out of the housings before removing the bumper completely.

a view with no bumper cover.... :wow: p.s the wires hanging are for my aftermarket fog lights.

I put a link in the Quick Links sticky. Thanks for the "How To".

I'll add that some of those "push pins" come out pretty easily if you use a couple of small "electronics size" screw drivers to pry the inner head up. Then the panel remover will pop them right out.

An anti-seize spray may also come in handy when removing push rivets. The little buggers can be stubborn sometimes, especially if they have dirt in them.

The parking light lens on the driver's side of our Patriot has a rock chip crack and condensation forms inside the parking light. I hope that I don't have to remove everything just to replace that parking light lens ?? Does it come off with just a flat screw driver applied to the side ??

Sorry Mike! I missed this earlier. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f98/c...lenses-718996/

Thanks Bob. I suppose that the lens on a Patriot is held on by 3 screws just like the Compass but even if it is different, I will still have to remove the wiring connector and bulb according to the writeup. Our old Dodge Caravan had a sliding panel in the wheel well for access to the turn signal bulb but even then it was handier to remove the wheel for starters.

schoat333,
Great write up. I followed it to the letter and had an easy time of removing my grill/bumper. I too only had one clip on the bottom. Really? what do those things cost, maybe $0.20 - $0.30... Oh well.

While my bumper cover was off, I installed an additional horn, three LED marker lights, and a set of driving lights (similar to the "Pilot" lights that have also been written up).

It all went back together well too. Now I just need to finish off the electrical. My lower dash is in pieces now as I look for a good place to put a couple of switches :)

Thanks again for taking the time to document the process.
Doug
