Recommendations on long haul

Hi all,

Read all the threads about towing with the compass 2.4l.

I have a 2012 2.4L. I have the oil cooler and class 3 tow hitch.

I have read that frontage area is a concern. I have no choice but to pull a wedge 5x8 enclosed trailer. (850lbs empty)... 6 feet high, 6 feet wide (36 square feet frontage) 4 square feet over recommended frontage in manual.

I have to drive from Florida to New York.

Recommendations on speed, locking out high gears is appreciated. I will probably have around 1650 lbs total weight back there (850lbs trailer plus 800lbs cargo = 1650lbs)

Thanks all!!

your mpg will suffer a lot the faster you go, I would stick to 65, maybe even 60mph as my max speed, and cary a little extra gas with you if there are long distances between gas stations. The gas take is stupid small at 13 gallons.. I haven't towed with my fdii patriot, but I cannot imagine what my fuel economy will look like towing... say you get 20mpg, thats only 260 miles between full and empty...

i assume you have the cvt, which has the stick shifter, you cannot lock out the higher gears, but you can decide which gear you want to be in. if you have a fdii I don't know if I would recommend going into low unless you have to going down a hill. But gearing is overall lower on a FDII so it might not be an issue. good luck, and have a safe trip!

Trip Success!

Jeep did great. Maintained 65 the whole way just about @ 3000 RPMs average.

got about 11 mgp... had to fill every 115 miles...

The cruise control was strange. On some inclines the cruise would maintain around 3500 rpms sacrificing around 5mph. On other inclines it would jump to 4500rpms just to maintain 65mph.

I played around with manual gear shifting, and kept it on 4th gear when cruise would try to jump to 4500rpm.

overall very pleased with the compass.
