Recall on 2012 Compass and Patriot for fire

Chrysler is recalling about 1,700 small Jeeps because faulty gas tank valves can cause fires.

The recall affects some 2012 all-wheel-drive Jeep Compass and Patriot SUVs.

Chrysler says the valves were damaged when the manufacturer tested them for leaks.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the valves can leak gasoline if the SUVs are involved in a crash. Chrysler says it doesn't know of any fires or injuries.

The recall is expected to start in June. Dealers will replace the fuel tanks free of charge.

Owners with questions can call Chrysler at (800) 853-1403.

I called jeep, my patriot was just built in March, so it's not part of the recall

The affected Patriots and Compasses were built from December 17, 2011 through January 2, 2012.

Funny that when they catch a potential fire Hazzard that could affect 1700 jeeps, they issue a recall... But when every unlimited wrangler with an auto trans risks transmission overheating and fire due to catalytic converter and tranny fluid combining, Chrysler keeps their mouths shut and denies that it's possible.

Let's not even bring up death wobble..... Well im glad to see that atleast this news got out. Good start Chrysler.

Technically, it affects some Four Wheel Drive vehicles (no All Wheel Drive vehicles.)

Don't they call it AWD on the Compass? And aren't they both AWD when not engaged in full time 4wd anyway?

MKs consider all AWDs and 4x4s as interchangeable nomenclature. It's either 'on demand' AWD or locked in to 4x4.

When the recall is published, it will read Four Wheel Drive.

There is a Front Wheel Drive (4x2) version, but those vehicles are not involved in this recall.

The MK Compass/Patriot has two different Four Wheel Drive (4x4) systems available -
The Freedom Drive I™ 4WD system and the The Freedom Drive II™ 4WD system
These are active full-time 4WD systems with selectable LOCK feature. They have both a high range and a low range.

Someone gave me this link- http://rubicon-trail.com/4WD101/4WD-AWD-autoAWD.html. You might find it interesting.
