Rear strut replacement
I am trying to replace the rear struts on a 2008 FDII Patriot. I had a look at the service manual section showing removal of the rear struts and attempted to do the job the steps outlined.
I got to the point where the strut was disconnected but wasn't able to lower the control arm enough to pull the top of the strut out of the body. Since then I found the guide here for the lift kit and it shows dropping the control arm. Will I need to do the same for just a strut replacement?
The shop quoted me $400 just for the labour on the rear struts. I did the front already, they were not that difficult.
Yes you will need to drop the control arm to get the strut out. Even at that they are not very easy to compress and pull out but can be done. I don't know of any special tool that could fit in the space to keep the spring compressed.

And no need to remove the rear LCA's at all.Done many Patriot rear struts,though a pain, that big prybar makes it much easier.I call it the "stupid stick".
I thought of putting a little extra down force on the control arm but didn't know if I would do more harm than good.
