Here'a reply that I pulled on the 'net to the same issue.

Quote:
You can definitely use synthetic in your rear diff and PTU. I worked for Chrysler for 5 years as a tech and also have run synthetics in my Patriot since I bought it 3 years ago and no issues. If you want to stick with MOPAR you can run their 75W-140 synthetic in your PTU and rear diff. The factory non synthetic 80W-90 is not that great and I have seen PTU's fail with this oil. The best place for synthetics is Amsoil.com. You just enter your vehicle and they will tell you what is available for the Patriot.
emailing or calling customer service at CDJ all you will get is 'see your owners manual'.

I sometimes wonder if these people answering e-mails for car mfg's actually know how to read and if they have an education higher than 1st grade?

Their reply was to go to the dealer and they will tell me the correct part # to get. COME ON! I told them I wanted to use synthetic not the OE 80W90.

All the dealer will do is say the owner's manual says use 80W90. That is not an answer to my question.

OY!

When you call or email Customer Service you don't talk to engineers, they are really just ordinary people on the other end that will look up VIN numbers and tell you if there is a recall or something like that. The same thing as the salesmen don't know much ether, IRSmart is one of the few exceptions. That's why forums have become so popular, you're more apt to find the answers you need.

I agree with you BUT instead of answering questions that they don't have a clue about forward it to an engineer or something to get the answer. Common sense.

Im sure the last thing manufacturers want is a paper trail leading to them telling you you could do this or that. That will come back to bite them in the butt in court someday. (gotta love lawsuits). The easiest and safest thing for them to tell you to do is follow the directions.

It's the old CYA or get sued, you're right! I even try to do that with caveats on in JF. I don't know if suing the forum or me would hold in court but I don't want to find out the hard way. If there is addition info it's either from personal experience or I tell you where the info came from, either way you'll know. I miss the 'good old days' when life was simple and ppl weren't so sue happy.

I went to change the gear oil this evening (wanting to get all the break material in the oil out), but my drain plug takes a 10mm hex and stopped the whole process...

Yup, we need to go metric every inch of the way. Taking out your back seat will take a T-50 Torx if you ever need to do that.

Took the jeep into the dealership because the malfunction indicator light came on. I was also planning to have the CVT serviced and see if they could find this squeak. They couldn't find where or what was causing the squeak (bird chirp). It also seems not to be as common now that the weather is getting colder. I mainly notice it when turning off the engine. Maybe something got on the belt that’s causing it. Who knows….
The malfunction light was on because the computer needed an update and reset.
The dealership actually recommended I don’t change the CVT oil or get it serviced because it is a sealed unit, difficult to get all the oil out, and refill to the correct level. Ok.

I have an annoying 'chirp' that comes the inner rear hatch panel that pops loose.
During the month I worked at a dealership the main mechanic, that I trusted, said the same thing about the CVT fluid.

Changed my PTU and rear drive unit. Each only had about 1/2 a quart in them and took about the same amount to refill. I needed a 10mm hex socket, 15/16 wrench and a 17mm socket to change both fluids. Don't forget to clean off the magnets on the lower drain plugs for both units.
