Program Patriot Key

My sister in law just bought a patriot and it only had one key. If she buys another one do the have to take it to the dealer to get programmed?

According to the Internet:

1. Insert the first of the two valid keys into the Jeep Patriot's ignition and start the engine. Leave the engine running for five to 10 seconds, then turn the engine off and remove the first key.

(You can skip step 2)

2. Within 15 seconds of removing the first key, insert the second of the two valid keys into the ignition and start the engine. You will hear a chime after 10 seconds, then the Vehicle Security Light will begin to blink. Turn the engine off and remove the second key.

3. Insert the key you would like to program into the ignition and start the engine--this must be performed within 60 seconds of removing the valid key. After 10 seconds, you will hear a chime and the Vehicle Security Light will stop blinking. The Security Light will return for three seconds, then turn off, indicating the programming was successful. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for each additional key you would like to program.

Hopefully this works for you.

One key won't do it, two are required. After you have the second key then you can make a spare and put it in a safe place.

So he'll need to take it into the dealer for programming?
Thanks

How much is a spare key without programming? Might behoove us to buy a spare and program it for free while we still have the 2 originals.

I'n not trying to side steep the dealership but I found an uncut, unprogrammed key on eBay. Mine was the full security key with the lock/unlock buttons and all and not one with just a chip. If it's just a key with a chip only then even ACE hardware has some of those and they can cut them too.

Bought mine off Ebay for $13.99. Just under $10 to cut and programmed it myself. Apparently you can do the programming 6 times.

Were you able to program the full security key as described above?

Yup, it worked fine, no problems at all. Just make sure it's uncut and not programmed. I 'think' it was about $60 for the full remote key, not just the 'chip' . That was back in '06 so prices could have changed.

Thanks to your input I'm going to give this a try.

I found one three button remote key and two plain keys, all new, uncut and unprogrammed for $48 with a 90 guarantee on the very large auction site.

I'll let you how it works out. Wish me luck!

UPDATE:

It worked! Thanks. Saved me $140.
