Greetings all;
I just picked up my Pat Limited last week. I'm sure I'll have about 5000 questions for you folks, but I wanted to start with the tires. There is a lot of good stuff here on the tire sizes. I'm wondering if, since these posts were last current, has anyone got any new opinions on upping the P size? I'm looking at getting rid of the Firestones that came with my Pat, and I want to go with the Forterra 225/65/17, since the Forterra starts out at 225. My alternative, if I want to keep to the DC numbers, would be the Assurance 215/65/17. I like the tread on the Forterra a whole lot better. The Nominal Pressures on the 225 Forterra are equivalent to the Firestones on my Pat now. So although the TPMS is calibrated to "Size," does the calibration actually have anything to do with physical size, or just pressure? Has anyone gone over the 215 DC limit yet, and with what results? Any opinions on whether they can void my warranty if I go to a 225? Thanks |

I'll offer some opinions based on what I've found out so far.
pillzny has posted pictures of his Compass with 245/35/20 here: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/3739436-post14.html The Startech Rallye is also running 20 inchers. I may be be going with Pirelli P235/60TR18 when my stock P215/55R18 wear out. It will most likely be out of my warranty when that happens. I think that the TPMS senses a change in volume. That's what it appeared to do when I got a slow leak from a nail. The 225/65/17 are 28.52" tall, only 1/2" taller than the ones that you have now with the better tread design as you mentioned. If I had a Patriot those are probably the ones that I would go with.

There should be no problem with warrenty if you're changing "consumables" like tires. There should be a size range specified somewhere, like the door panel or in the glove box, maybe the manual, that says all the sizes that come stock, and the correct pressures.
on the subject of pressure, there shouldnt be too much of an psi change on that size tire. the cherokee had 5 sizes stock through the entire span, from 195 stock minimum to 235 option on some off-road packages. Pressure was 30 cold on all the sizes.

Nope,
JF has very specific unwritten rules. 1. Don't brag about something you've done to your Jeep unless you can back it up. 2. Pictures always serve as backup. 3. See rule #1. Hunter

BTW - a 31" tall tire in 16" rims comes out to a 255/75R16 tire.
