Off-Road Capabilities with a Manual Patriot?
 
I'm seriously looking at getting a Patriot Sport 4x4, however I'm still confused on what the off-road capabilities of the 5-Speed manual are against the CVT2 with FD2. I'm not totally sold on both but I've heard more reports of better gas millage on the manuals then the CVT's.

I'm not a hardcore off-roader as this is my first jeep I will own, heck the second car I will own as my first was a mercury couger, but the ability to go off-road interests me greatly. I don't see myself rock-climbing per say as my friend does in his Wrangler, but definitely going down trails and the occasional camping trips, hiking, etc. I have looked all over this forum and on the jeep site looking for more information on what exactly the manual transmission comes with in regards to 4x4 mode and if it has the FD technology.

I understand I get the ESP and traction control, but do I also get the 4-wheel lock? Also how rough of a terrain can I go over without the CVT and FD2 package? It my understanding that the cvt and fd2 are really only there for the serious off-roader that is rock-climbing along side wranglers and such, is this correct?

I live in Montana, so the rough terrain is there, but I would also like to drive to Portland, OR to visit family and friends. My commute is usually about 15 minutes to-from work as I live very close by.
What made owners buy the manual transmission against the CVT?

I have the five speed and yes it does have the 4 wheel drive lock. I have used it for deep snow and it works well. Otherwise the full time all wheel drive handles light snow, rain, patchy ice, etc. excellently. My understanding is the FDII adds a low range for more serious off roading. The FDI has the same capabilities as the manual I believe except I like the better control, performance and mileage from the 5 speed. I look forward to the summer and driving power line trails and old logging tracks in northern Michigan.

I bought the manual for the same reasons as Trek620...I just enjoy the experience better. Also, it happens to be a great transmission. As far as off-roading, I'm sure the FDII is a much more capable system, though I've heard from other owners in my area it may be a bit of overkill. Also, we don't really know the long-term reliability of the CVT transmission. I think that the FDII is a good value for the price, but the FDI with manual transmission is a less complex and less expensive setup.

There is a CVT2 that is available with the FD I package and the CVT2L that is only on the FD II package. Both have only 1 "range" as does the 5 speed. The difference is the final drive, you'll either have 4WD high with the FD I or 4WD low with the FD II. The 5 speed gets the best mpg, then the CVT2 and then the CVT2L. Not really too many people ever use the low range of there regular 4WD vehicles, only those that do some serious wheeling. To do that kind of wheeling you sacrifice mpg unless you want to hold your speed down to about 55 mph on that trip to Portland. It sounds to me like you would be happier with the 5 speed and FD I. The FD II also give you these features, some of which you may want to add on to an FD I later depending on your interests or may be included with the E Sport package..

I have a 2.0 CRD Compass with 6-speed manual gear box. It's a 4x4 with FDI. First more serious test-drive you can see from here

My personal conclusions are:
- The FDII would be good as with the FDI and no gas-pedal the downhill speed may be to high.
- the lift of 1-2'' would be useful
- a front skid plate to protect the engine and other stuff underneath the vehicle

But overall, the feeling was fabulous :cool:

I agree the lift and skids on the FD I would cover most people. A little know fact: the CVT2 also has some hill decent controls, too, it just doesn't light up the dash and maybe less aggressive than the CVT2Ls.

Thanks for the inputs guys. I test drove a CVT FD2 patriot last night and played with it in the snow. Scared the dealer when I got it on a 10-20 degree roll pitch (if that is the right terminology). I liked it, but I did notice the high rpm's at highway speed (65-70 mph @ 2700-3000 rpm's). When I see myself wheelin, I pretty much see myself doing the stuff in those pics and vids. Nothing really hard core but definitely going down trails that would require a 4X4. The dealership here has a compass 4x4 with the manual. I'm thinking about giving that a test drive, however it's been quite a while since I drove a manual.

About the skid plate's, can those be bought aftermarket?

Personal Opinion:

4 Low is almost worthless on most Stock SUV's. Most of them need to be highly modded to go somewhere that you really NEED 4 low. It might be NICE, but you can live without it. (CJ's and Wranglers are glaring exceptions here)

If/when I buy a Patriot (to replace my commuter, not my KJ or my TJ) it will be a FDI Manual.

That said, I'll still have the TJ and the KJ, both of which have 4-low.

In general you are correct. There are a few of us that do use the 4Low feature regularly. I have an '06 CRD Liberty that has to also work and not just provide transportation. I have to pull trailers, including a 300 gallon fuel wagon, thru farm fields. I have also pulled out a lot of stuck vehicles out here in the country this last winter, including a Interstate Batteries straight truck that had gotten stuck.

Most, obviously, don't need a 4Low feature, but it is sure nice to have when you have a need for it. My .02 is that I would prefer to have it and not need it than the other way around.

That's a great video. I wish I could have ordered one with a 6-speed though.

That's only available on the CRD which isn't available in the N.A. market. :(
